Lower Back Pain

In 3/05 when I went into the hospital, I had been dealing with terrible lower back pain for months. It was so bad that I couldnt cough, making my treatments impossible. I could barely get out of bed & god forbid there be a fire & I would have to move fast. After being in the hospital & getting my lungs cleared up, it went away or should I say moved up to my shoulders. The shoulders make a difference with my airways, but didnt hurt so much I couldnt do my treatments. Anyway the lower back was fine. I went back into the hospita in 5/05 & came home. Within the last 5 days the lower back has started again. Granted that my lungs are not as clear as when I was in the hospital just because the treatments are not as intense, but I am sure not overly congested. I have been much worse in my life & never had this problem. I have started massage therapy & went to their office last nite with no appointment because I was in such pain. Although the lower back was tender, they could not find a muscle spasm or really hurt anything when pressing on my back. After a treatment, I was able to move better, but could still feel it lingering. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? The only time I usually have lower back problems is occaisionally when I have my period, but it goes away. This can stay for days/months.

Prior to my 5/05 I went to my regular chiro & it didnt help. The heat is the only thing that eased it & it didnt stay away.

This thread got me wondering. Where exactly on your back is this pain? The reason i ask is because i experienced pain a few months ago in my lower right back (right below the ribs) and finally found out it was something called pleural rub ( where the pleura betweeen chest wall was inflamed ) it was quite painful to breathe deep, lay on that side and anything else that involved that area. When you mention the pain moved to your shoulders it made me wonder if it might not just be your lungs and some inflammation? Pleural inflammation is painful and it might be something you might want to check into, if you havent already. Just a point to ponder<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

I have had pleuresy & its not that. It is literally the lower back muscles. Below my rib cage & above my hips, all the way across. It twinges like a stiff neck if I strain to lean over or move the wrong way. When I went for massage therapy yesterday, it just ached all over. That was from walking at a street fair the day before.

Do you think you have Kidney Stones? When I have had that I have a constent ache from my ribs to my hips all the way across, sometimes more intense on one side than the other. Can sometimes radiate through out, like to your chest or shoulder. Aches can stay for days or until you pass a stone. Try drinking a lot of water and see if that helps ease off the pain. If it does, then you might have a kidney stone. It took the doctors 2 years to find my first one. They tested me a few times and said there was nothing wrong. I had an ultrasound and an IVP before they offically said I had one. Hope that helps

Make sure you have checked out all of your organs. When I was suffering from severe pain my lower back, ended up being mild kidney failure! I ended up having a ton of stones in my kidneys as well. I thought I was just sleeping in a bad position the whole time. I would have never thought of my organs until a doctor suggested I was maybe having kidney problems. The nephrologist I spoke to about it said that this can be very common in CF (stones).

Also, non-related to CF, my grandmother was suffering from such severe lower back pain that she couldn't stand for several weeks. Her doctors had thought it was a herniated disc in her lower back but it ended up being a gall stone blocking her gall bladder function, which ultimately sended her into toxicity and she had (still has) a ton of complications regarding it.

I would ask your doctor about testing your kidney and liver functions and maybe doing ultrasounds of your kidneys and gall bladder to rule out any of those problems. I know sometimes CF causes gall stones and "muck" in your gall bladder that can slow down function.

Anyway... I really hope you start to feel better soon, Jazzysmom!

Thanks for the input. I thought about my kidneys. I do have to say that it did start when I wasnt keeping an eye on my water intake. Maybe I'll luck out & flush out whatever it is. If not...more tests probably!

Guess what....we found the cause of my lower back pain. It was from constipation. This year I have been very prone to dehydration which results in constipation. If I slack off at all on my water I can tell a difference. I just didnt notice THAT much of a difference in my bowel movements.
