Our hospital started a contract with a massage therapist and she comes around to give massages to patients (covered as part of hospital stay).

Anyone else get massages in the hospital room?

If not, its something worth asking about--it is something nice to have while you are locked up!

When I was at the Children's Hospital in Cincinnati they had a massage therapist and it was wonderful. Being able to relax and be just a little pampered for that little bit of time was so refreshing. They don't have it at my usual hospital, though. I've asked about it before, but nothing has happened as of yet.

I haven't been in the hospital for anything recently but when I was there a lot before my transplants there was/is one at Cincinnati Childrens She would also give a massage to my mom or grandma if she had some extra time. I always had a family member with me at the hospital.

I agree though, all hospitals should definitely look into hiring massage therapists! Raise awareness and start requesting It's worth a try anyway.

My daughter used to get massages once a week while in. She loved them and when she came home her aunt would come once a week. As she became sicker she had a lot of joint pain and it really helped. I learned some as well and the massage therapist would use a lavendar oil and that seemed to assist with helping her breath. Her hospital also had in addition to massage a group of folks Healing Hands. At first I thought that was a bunch of crap until I saw it work. There were times chest pt did nothing and these folks came in and it has something to do with magnetic fields . She told me she could feel her body tingle as as soon as they moved over her chest she would just start coughing and bringing up stuff. And it also helped relax her.

UnivColoHosp has one that can be arranged "on an out patient basis" when you are an in-patient. In other words, billed separately.
Stanford Hospital had one that was allowed to visit rooms and worked for cash.
Besides the relaxing aspects, I believe that there are actual lung-benefits to massage. Having the shoulder and upper back muscles un-tightened assists me in lung clearance. And I have found that a well-educated massage therapist- who knows what's connected to what- works the ribs and pressure points, and can actually increase my FEV1 by several points. Though the relief is temporary.

At our hospital that massage and healing touch. Haven't used it but offered it to my daughter the last time we were in. She has never had a massage so I don't think she knows what she is missing.

We had the massage and healing touch and the first visit was free, but you could donate, then you were charged after that, but the cfers got free unlimited while inpatient! But there wasnt a lot of therapists so generally only got one once a week and the most I was in for was 2 weeks.

At my new one, they have them, but you have to pay I think, only one visit so far.

I went to get a massage as a fluke and now I go weekly. It really has helped my breathing and abdomen. I get lots of stomach distention and she does an abdominal massage each week. It really helps in reducing the distention. She also does pressure points. It's well worth every penny and I strongly suggest to at least try it once. I was lucky enough to be brought together with a massage therapist who was knowledgable in CF.
