Measures to lessen the severity of a cold??

I just got over a 10 day long horrible cold that ended in a sinus infection that require antibiotics. I am usually pretty tough with colds etc, but this one forced me to take my first day off work in 5.5 years. I thought we were in the clear with my daughter (CF) since it has been well over a week since I got sick, but this morning she woke up with a hoarse voice. So far she is acting fine. I realize it may be nothing or a different virus, but if it is the same thing I had, I am freaking out for her! Any advise on lessening severity of colds at this point?? I will up her vest and start albuterol if she starts to cough (she normally doesn't have any resp symptoms so we just do the vest daily and no nebs).....

Sounds like you are doing the right things; extra Vest and albuterol. I usually try to increase fluids, get plenty of rest, healthy foods. Also, in the past I had used saline nasal spray to help get the boogers out. SInce my daughter was about 3 1/2 years old I have used Hypertonic saline twice a day via a face mask and it has lessened the amount of antibiotics we've needed to get her through colds. Sometimes you can do all the right things and your child will still need antibiotics; just being aware and staying on top of doing the VEST and albuterol will make a difference and you'll know when to call the doc if need be.

On a daily basis we do albuterol/atrovent and vest 3 times a day. We increase the vest -- add another vest with albuterol/atrovent treatment, sometimes I'll increase the time we do it if he's busy playing a video game. Sometimes will do mini-CPT sessions and have him try to cough it out. His doctor has told us from day one that if there's a wheeze or a little cough to "beat it out of him".

I'll steam up the bathroom and let him play in the tub for a while to get things moving. And since he turned 4 we've been doing sinus rinses after bath time if he has a cold. Prior to that we used saline spray and the dreaded booger sucker.

Also push the liquids -- juice, water, popscicles. Try to get him to bed earlier.

I also keep an eye on increased respirations at rest -- normal for DS is 18-20 breaths per minute while sleeping. If he starts breathing faster, that's usually a sign. Also check his temp, listen to his cough -- is it a junky bronchial type cough or just a post nasal drip cough. DS doesn't usually cough. So if it's anything out of the norm, with the increased breathing and junkier cough, I'll call the doctor's office after a day or so. Interestingly enough, when he has gotten bronchitis in the past, he hasn't gotten a fever. Drives me nuts!
