yours will be a different circumstance since medicare is not your primary......i can only assume that is a better position to be in. Have you looked through your employee handbook? It should have a section explaining what is covered for transplant and if transplants are covered at all.
Some insurance companies have special incentives to choose certain facilities that they may consider higher quality or other reasons. Their special incentives include paying for travel expenses and some extraneous things. A big expense connected with transplant is travel, from what I have heard. When I say travel.....I mean "life flight". If you live far from the center you have chosen, you can sometimes require as many as 3 flights d/t just the nature of getting to the "right lungs". Insurance will cover some of that expense;but, there is a limit to that and those flights can get expensive.
I also think, though not sure on this, that if you are on Medicare when you receive a transplant then Medicare covers some of the cost of drugs.
Your question may have seemed like a simple one....but, there are a lot of factors that go into what your costs will be so there is not an easy answer. If I were you and you feel you may be close, I would start by finding out some of the basics:
does my primary insurance cover transplants?
do they have an incentive program to sign up for?
what facilities would I be able to go to? This is important to know how far you will have to travel and stay for recovery.
what is my lifetime maximum on my primary insurance?
Those are some good questions to start with. Sorry if I gave you too much<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
