Meeting with school district office tomorrow....He is not even 3 yet! Looking for any pointers.

Hi Guys,

I have read plenty already on this topic. In my couple years of being a CF Mommy. However I'm completely in a panic now that it's time to create my own IEP. The correct program is actually called IFSP. IFSP is the Part C Program for infants and toddlers with disabilities. Our son is very behind in his speech. We our going to start speech therapy in our home in the next few weeks with a speech therapist. Tomorrow I meet with the school district to write up an IEP or IFSP for Johnny. I have done some homework on this topic, and .I have checked out Lisa Greens website for pointers.

I still have questions! Some of what I have read obviously doesn't apply because he will be going to school for only two in a half hours Mon-Thurs. What are some important things to highlight? I put down a few that I want to be clear about. Please add in if you have more. I'm sorry I thought we have another three years of home with Mommy. Going off to big boy school is a very BIG DEAL! I know this is going to be good for him. I have accepted that I can't keep him home forever, and he needs to experience life. Thanks in advance!

Crazy Mom,

*Johnny takes Pancreatic Enzymes before snack/meals. I will supply enzymes and daily package of applesauce and plastic spoon for him. I will request that this be given his enzymes in his classroom, not the nurses office.

*I will express to the school to please contact me when a flu or cold is going around. That way we can take appropriate precautions.

*I will express the importance of good hand washing, and using frequent hand sanatizer. I will also offer to supply some to Johnny's class.

*I will also stress the importance of keeping away from standing water when possible.

*During hot weather Johnny needs to be allowed to have his salty snacks and Gaterade. Again he will only be there two and half hours. I don't think I need to write up allot on allowing time for his high calorie snacks. Or should I put it in there?

Being that it's only a short period of time, I wouldn't worry about allowing time for his high calorie snack. If you're like me, then you'll probably have snacks with you when you pick him up -- I keep snacks in my car, have juice boxes available, gatorade..

In terms of the flu or cold going around, I would explain that something a simple as a cold to one child, could turn into something much more serious for yours, so it's important that they enforce their rules in terms of keeping other children home or sending them home if they're feverish or have been sick.

Think of it to as a stepping stone to elementary school. You're going to see what works, what doesn't, as well as learn to let go a little bit. Won't be AS scary when it's time for regular school. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

DS went to an afternoon pre-kindergarten Safety Town for about 2 1/2 hours last summer for a couple weeks and while they didn't have snack time, I DID indicate on the application to be aware of the heat issue -- that he may need frequent water and bathroom breaks. He's been great about letting us know if he needs salt or water, but when he was a toddler, we did have to have his daycare remind him or be vigilant because he'd be too busy playing to want to stop and take a water/salt break.

You haven't mentioined any bathroom issues. Do you want to discuss allowing him to use the restroom when needed and that tummy aches may mean that it can be more frequent than other kids? Or if he isn't potty trained, do you need to address this too?

My daughter has a feeding tube, so we had to have issues surrounding that on the paperwork.

You'll also want to point out that he can't be with other CF kiddos and that you need to be contacted if another child with CF will be attending the school.

Finally, and this probably doesn't apply at his age, but you might want to address attendance policies and what happens if he goes into the hospital. With the therapy continue at the hospital, is there a fee for missed sessions, etc.
