Megace and high blood sugar

Josh's doctors told us that they were hesitant to give him megace because it can cause high blood sugar and he had that problem with the gatifloxacin in Feb.

Have any of you been on megace and had this side effect? I would rather take our chances with the megace right now just to have him gain some weight.

Another thing they recommended was using Benecal supplement. (by Novartis) Its basically a high calorie, no flavor, glob of greasy goo that you put into food. They told us to just put it through Josh's g-tube but eeeeeewwwww. Imagine 1/4 cup of goo with 33 grams of fat on an empty stomach? Of course he puked.

Anyone have experience with either of these?

There's been some other posts about it. I think Karen recommended it when Josh's doctor first tried Marinol.

It is an appetite increaser used for cancer and aids patients, also with anorexics. It is a female hormone.

HOw did Josh do with the Marinal? The idea of using Megace on a kid his age scares me...But it does work well for some.

Josh did get a few munchie attacks but not enough to keep up with it. He really hated feeling stoned and even said " I can't believe people do this ON PURPOSE". Now he's got a good story for his 9th grade health class.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Ahhhh okay thanks.

You could always supply him with pot brownies. (For anyone not aware... that is a joke).

Seriously, if you're looking for him to gain weight, there are other meds that aid that. Birth control being one of them, but that doesn't apply here. Anti-depressants is another one. Not saying put him on them for that purpose, but IF he's already on one, try switching to one that has weight gain as a side effect. I hope that made sense.

Jane,

I don't know to much about megace, but they are going to try Courtney on it this month.

We see the doc on the 15th and I will ask questions.

Emily,

I thought it was funny you mentioned "pot brownies".

When the doc explained megace to me he told me it is like pot, but with all of the bad stuff out of it.

MAJOR MUNCHIES......LOL

Gatifloxacin (Tequin) causes low blood sugar, not high.

Amy, it could go either way with the tequin (gati). In Josh's case it caused high sugar. He was on gati from Nov. 04 to Feb 06. His sugars were between 150 and 220. They thought he had CFRD until the news came out about the gati. As soon as we took him off, they went down to 90 or so.

I was put on Magace when I was 15 and it helped a whole lot, however I didnt have CFRD at that time. Now though, I do and I'm on it again. My bloodsugars arent that bad though, I can just take the Lantus at night and have no problems throughout the day...usually. I dont really think the Magace has affected then too much, if at all really.
