Merca Staph Infection Questions

Grayson is 23 days old and had bowel surgery due to meconium illeus. She has a colostomy bag on the upper portion of her bowel and is being fed through the lower part of her bowel. She developed a fever last week which they treated with antibiotics. I was concerned because a few days before this her feeding tube was pulled from her lower bowel and had to be reinserted. She then had like a pus or something around the opening of the lower bowel. She tested postive for merca(sp) yesterday. She is no isolated from the other babies in the NICU and everyone has to wear protective clothing. They told my daughter that she possibly passed that to Grayson. I don't think that is what happened and we are now wondering if this has happened to anyone else. I am concerned that they are not following all guidelines for handwashing etc..... One nurse told me and my daughter that in the 5 yrs she has worked at the Nationwide Childrens Hosptial in Columbus OH, Grayson is the first baby born who they have known beforehand had CF. Now I am alittle worried.

Hospitals are germy places. And then considering the type of surgery she had -- lots of fecal material... Despite proper handwashing, ds developed a fever a week or so after his surgery, had to have a spinal tap and was put on IV antibiotics for 10 days. Happened again. Then the day after he was released from the hospital -- ended up back in the local hospital on IV antibiotics. Then he came home with a cough/runny nose and we found he cultured Enterbactor Choclae -- a common NICU bug.

I would hope they are agressively treating her with IV ABX and would also hope that she be isolated from the other babies due to the MRSA. You may want to post in the family section for more responses -- I think a couple parents had children in the NICU who also developed MRSA or another infection...
