SHE POSTED THIS ON SOMEONE ELSE'S TOPIC, AND HASN'T BEEN REPLIED TO YET.

SORRY TO BE SO FORWARD AS TO REPOST IT FOR HER, BUT I THINK SHE REALLY NEEDS SOMEONE TO TALK TO, AND BEING NEW MAY NOT KNOW HOW TO START HER OWN TOPIC.

Good luck to you Mertz! I have a lot of things to do right now, but I will try to chat later.

Hi Mertz,
I am a father of a 4 month old babygirl w/cf .Let me start by saying watch what you read online! I did that when we first found out and it totaly freaked me out. If you want to read up on cf go to cff.org .
You will find that talking to people on this site is going to help you alot.
I know it helped me , don't know what i would do with all these guys here!
And cry as much as you want ,let it out . If you ever need to just talk IM me , I would be more than happy to talk.
You will be my thought and prayers.

Hi Mertz; welcome to the site. I'm sorry you are struggling with this. I've been where you are, and I know how hard it is. The good news is that now your child can get the proper treatments, and will most likely be healthier for it.

My son was diagnosed when he was 15. It was very hard to tell him. He was old enough to have researched it on his own, so he was aware that CF is a terminal illness. Since your son is only 8, you may want to keep the terminal part to yourself at first? You know your child and what he is capable of handling, but I would think that, at that age, it would be too overwhelming at first. If he were my child, I'd start by telling him that the doctors have finally figured out what has been causing him to feel bad, and that they are going to help him feel better. Maybe let him absorb bits of it at a time.

Again, I'm just so sorry you must face this. This site is a great source of education and support. Do be careful of what you read on the web. Most of it is very outdated. You can find good info here or go to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation site. Feel free to ask questions, and/or just vent if you need to. Keep us posted on how your son is doing.

Mertz I am going to reinterate what Kaylasdad suggested don't go on a lot of websites. If you want information go on www.cff.org.

I am still new to this, but my suggestion is lean on your friends and family right now. Talking through it has helped me. Also this site helps a lot. Sometimes when I did talk to my friends they didn't understand exactly what I was going through. Everyone here has been there and it is nice to hear words of encouragement when you are down. Hang in there and give your precious son a big hug!!!
