Metformin

Hi,

I am finally starting another cycle! I'm CD2 with it being a spontaneous cycle. Last cycle, I had to induce with provera so I am very pleased that after 35 days, this new cycle has started.

I am curious as to those using metformin. Was it due to PCOS that was diagnosed or presumed? I have read that you can't use if you are pregnant... so if you do an IUI, do you stop after you inseminate?

Any info would be very helpful. Jenny (fondreflections) had some good ideas and yes, I know my RE is not following me as closely as I think I need to be seen. He keeps reiterating that well, we'll keep watching it naturally and then maybe do some low dose clomid. He also focuses on the financial aspect of an intravaginal US to look at follicles... I think he still is wary of me having a baby despite me passing the ethics consult with the high risk OB and my CF dr on board with this plan.

I also had a few cycles where I didn't ovulate at all. My progesterone level on CD 21 was 1.3 (greater than 3 is what they say is indicative of ovulation). I haven't seen an LH surge in the past cycles.

I do have some insulin resistance and have noted that despite gaining weight (10 lbs since sept), my morning sugars are ~120-140 with intermittent highs 2 hours post-prandial (normal within 3 hours though). I have not used insulin really at all. I am disgruntled with the wt gain as I am not eating more than normal and it's really not fun to have extra on a 5'0" frame!

Thanks, Jenn

Jenn,

I took Metformin for exactly 2 weeks. Like I said, the two infertility clinics claimed that I had PCOS upon ultrasound and bloodwork. My left ovary was the worser of the two.

The bloodwork was drawn in August/September 2006. I had started Vitex in October 2006 and met my new high-risk OB/GYN doctor in March 2007. He started me on Metformin (to mature my eggs) but also decided to repeat the bloodwork in the meantime.

The bloodwork came back 'normal'. He told me to stop taking it because I didn't need it. Even my ultrasound looked 'good'. My previous bloodwork and ultrasound was ify/bad. However, it wasn't as bad as many other women. I always had left ovarian cysts too. However, I always got my periods like clockwork had really had no idea about
PCOS because I was pretty 'normal' besides the cysts.

Anyway, the purpose of the Metformin was to mature the eggs yet still allow Jake and I to try naturally. Once we conceived, I was to stop the Metformin immediately. However, I would have had to be monitored with additional bloodwork and ultrasounds while taking it.

Two words of caution...

1.) Metformin is nasty...I was only on it for 2 weeks, but it has lots of fun side effects. I was started out on 500 mg once a day for 1 week. I was getting really bad headches but was able to tolerate them. The second week I was told to up it too 500 mg twice a day. The headaches got much more intense, and then massive, unpredictable diahrrea kicked in. I would have to use the toilet about 5 times a day...The third week (if continued) would have been 500 mg three times a day! That is the standard dose! Whatever you do, make sure your doctor spaces out your doses. Some doctors prescribe 1 or 2 massive doses at once which can make you VERY SICK. Either do 500 mg three times a day or an extended Metformin!!!

2.) You CAN NOT take Vitex with Clomid!!! I don't think that applies to you yet, but you are looking into IUI so I thought I should mention it. I wouldn't be surprised if your doctor mentions using it. Clomid and Vitex counteract each other. I would be hesitant to start Vitex IF IUI was in the back of my mind.

Also, you may not get many hits on this thread because not too many members have taken Metformin. If I missed anything just ask!

HUGS,
Jenny

Two other things...

Metformin MUST be taken with lots of food or else you will get sick to your stomach.

You can buy a 30-day supply for $4.00 at any Walmart Pharmacy. It was cheaper for me to fill it at Walmart than send it to my prescription plan. You may even be able to get a 3-month supply @ Walmart for $10.00!!! I hadn't tried that. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
