Whats it like to have one???

The "talk" came up today. I keep eating and I keep losing. I am now at 97lbs (5'4) and I just don't see a way to get on the good side. So I would like to know what its like to have one. Also for moms that have one, what are the chance of your kiddo pulling it out (daughter is 18 months).

I am going to try and look into the GNC stuff thats 2200 cals but I dunno if the docs are willing to let me try it.

**I went back and was reading alot of the g-tube posting, of course most are from parents dealing with kids, so I would like adult perspectives...

But can someone walk me through the process?

Also I was looking at the different ones and the AMT mini looks awesome, I want it lol. Anyone have info?

How do it work, and what is this about replacing pieces??? I just don't think I can stick stuck in my body. I haven't even gotten the courage to access my own port and its been 5 years.

And what do you do if it comes out, what comes out?

O my..I really think this is the right decision for me but I just worry about the pain, inconvience, etc.

Your older so maybe it'll be different for you, but in my opinion, I hate it.

A. *If you do night feedings/Depending on the amount of fluid* You wake up full and nauseous.*
B. It's a horrible eyesore.
C. It can work if you stick with it, but I hated it and couldn't put up with it after a few months. *Still have it, Have had for 6 years, just rarely use it*
D. The chances of it coming out are slim if you take care of it. Only had mine come out once, So just pay attention to your surroundings and you'll be good :]

I was looking into those from GNC too, My Dr. gave me the okay, Just have to consume more water than normal during the day, So I'd be surprised if your Dr's said no. Look into Scandishakes to. *if you havent already* They're about 600 calories a package but I normally have about 4-5 at once. As a replacement for not using the G-Tube

A. really? I'm not big on breakfast so I wouldn't mind waking up full.
B. Thats not a worry, my hubs could care less as long as I'm alive...plus it will go with the galbladder scars and pretty port sticking out lol.
C. Why couldn't you put up with it? Isn't it just something you do at night?
D. Pulling it out scares me the most.

I HATE scandishakes...the only thing I will drink is boost. Also why do you have to consume more water?

I don't have one, my son does however. Thus I can't answer the feeling full part.

Trust me you/your daughter will not pull out a mickey button (a bard is different and is designed to be pulled out).

The MicKey has a balloon on the 'inside' of your stomach, it is about the size of a golf ball and you would have to pull it through a hole the size of a pencil if you didn't deflate first. As long as you take care of the mickey, it will not be coming out w/o you passing out <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> FYI, our 7yr old son has tried to remove his repeatedly w/o any luck.

Also, if appearance is important, ask about a "AMT Mini". It looks and works just like the MicKey but has a smaller profile and does not stick out quite a much.
