Minocycline side affects

I posted this to the "families" forum, but not many folks my daughter's age (5 yrs) have had to take Minocycline. I know it is given to some CF adults so here goes...

Hi everyone!
I am new to this forum/posting, but I have been using this web site as a resource for a few years. My daughter is five years old w/CF, and she is culturing Sten Maltophilia. Last week she was coughing up blood so after trying Levo 3 months ago the doc decided to put her on Septra and Minocycline even though she is actually too young to be on the tetracyclines. Anyway, she developed a horrid rash from the Septra so we stopped that med last night. Now she is very dizzy/naseous/has headaches from the minocycline. She has been almost completely bed-ridden with the side affects from this minocycline. I suppose there is no REAL question here--just a parent going nuts and feeling very helpless right now. I trust my doctor completely, but I don't know if I should call and complain about how miserable she has felt. Is this a normal reaction? I just want her to be safe...the discomfort she is in seems excessive, but we are only five years into this CF life.
Thanks for listening.

Hi Michelle,
When i first started taking minocycline i would be dizzy for about 4 days till my system got used to it. This happened every time my Dr. put me back on it ( 4 or 5 days of dizziness till my body got used to it) but after about 6 months of using it on and off every few weeks the dizziness went totally away. The odd thing is i was on bactrim which is a septra, THAT always gave me headaches, and still does whenever i take it. You may want to mention it to the Dr. about the dizziness etc. from the minocycline.

Thanks for getting back to me about this Anika and Diane! It helps me to know this is a pretty normal reaction. She has felt much better today--walked around and seemed to feel less dizzy. We stopped the Septra so that may have also helped with the headaches. It is inspiring to hear you are 41, Diane!!
Thanks for the support and replies,

Michelle

I just got off Septra and then minocycline, and both caused bad reactions. The septra i was on for about a week, and kept getting a swelled up lip.. I looked like I just got out of a fist fight or something! Then the dr put me on minocycline which caused really bad rashes/hives . I've been off of the minocycline for about nine days, and I'm still getting them. The dr put me on a steriod pack a few days ago - they have improved, but not yet gone away.

I will NEVER take this medicine again!

I am sorry to hear that other folks have had reactions, but it is nice to hear that I am not alone.

My hives have been so bad that if I had a choice between CF and the hives, I would choose CF .
