Miralax and children...

Our dd (6, 42#) was just started on this and I wanted to see if the dosage was similiar to what others use. We do 17 g (1 scoop) in 8 oz of fluid two times/day for a few weeks, gradually reducing down to once a day for long-term. Also, her dr said if we needed to we could increase to as much as 2 scoops 2 times per day. The label on the bottle (from the manufacturer) says 1 scoop one time/day for an adult and not to use it long term. I realize that drs very frequently use higher dosages/greater frequency and longer duration than manufacturer's suggestions but I wanted to check with others to see if it was in line with what they were also doing. Thanks!

I was using it twice a day for quite a while due to nearly having a blockage in my bowel. AS things have regulated though I only use it when I feel I am starting to get backed up. I don't use it everyday at all. I actulaly haven't used it for quite some time.

our doctor gives us one prescription for miralax at a time. I think because he doesn't want us to use it long term, but I am not exactly sure. Hope this helps.

Samantha is 2 1/2 about 26# and she takes one scoop (17 grams) a day. When she is stooling very well, we sometimes skip a day. If she starts getting backed up (crabby, no stool, spitting up/vomiting) then we sometimes give her an extra scoop a day.

You could also try using Fibrestore (from Reliv - www.reliv.com). That has worked much better for me and in much smaller doses than Miralax. I stay very regular and I like Fibrestore better because I know that I am also getting necessary nutrients, not just flushing my system. It has a light pineapple flavor - you can put it in juice and it's really good. You can start out high, like a whole scoop twice a day and then scale back to as little as 1/4 scoop per day and still get good results. Flax Seeds also work really well for being stopped up. If you grind them in a coffee grinder, you can add them to just about anything without noticing it - muffins, toast, sandwiches, soups, applesauce, etc.. Flax Seeds also have lots of really good nutrients in them, so you are feeding your body as well as regulating your bowels.

My 4 year old Brady does the miralax normally once a day -- 1 scoopful in juice. He has been on for over 2 years every day. He will be on forever as far as I know. When he is having problems he does it 2 to 3 times a day along with his normal lactulose- 2 tsp twice a day.
