Mono

My 7 year-old and 5 year-old are recovering from mono. They had a tough time with it. They were wiped out all the time. Does anyone have any experience with mono and cf. I have heard that once you have had mono, sometimes your health is not quite the same, i.e. have to be extra careful to get rest. If that is true, I was wondering about how that might have a worse effect when you have cf as well. Also, I thought little children are not usually affected by mono, only teenagers and older getting sick with it. We have a clinic visit in a couple of days, and I was going to ask dr. about it, but I thought I might ask here about your experiences.

I found out that I have mono a month ago. The symptoms and severity can vary hugely for everyone. I know someone who almost had to have a trachiotomy because his throat closed up so bad! For me the first few days just felt like a bad cold: horrible sore throat, stuffy nose, tired. I also ended up getting a secondary infection that went right to my lungs so I had to go on antibiotics.

They can have pretty severe fatigue for a couple of months after getting over the initial cold-type symptoms. If they need to sleep, let them, they will get to feeling better faster if they have lots of rest. As far as your health never bouncing back, I have never heard of that. My doc just said to heavy lifting or contact sports because mono can cause the spleen to enlarge and rupture if there is too much stress on it.

Kids can get mono, and a lot do that go undiagnosed unless its severe since it mimics a garden variety cold for most of them.

my son is 6....last year he had tubes in his ears in December...In Jan he was so tired and didnt want to eat i knew somthing was wrong so we took him to the DR and he had mono. At the time though we did not know he had CF...He was VERY drained and lost 4 lbs....Since then we found out he has CF and it just seems like even though he has CF he is doing well....He wasnt sick after the mono except for a cough which is why i had him tested for CF...I hope your kiddos do well too and it doesnt affect them once they are fully recoverded!!!
