Hi Again everyone,

I posted a while ago because i was worried about my son due to family history of CF. I'll try to briefly update you on our situation. The bottom line is that i don't think my son has CF but i want to know whether the type of stools he is having sound normal or abnormal. I have agonized about them for months and have removed gluten from both of our diets and also tried feeding him less fiber to see if his stools become more "normal." I am at the brink of deciding that his stools are normal not worrying but my husband is now saying that they are abnormal (after insisting they were normal for months) so i am posting to try and figure it all out. Also my son had a negative sweat test and my DH (who is a molecular biologists) determined that we are not carriers of the DF508 allelle. Although there is still a very small possibility that i carry my family's other allele.

My son is 14 months. When he was 5 months his fingernails stopped growing (my dh said it was because he was "wearing them down" but neither of us think that is the case anymore.) By 12 months both his weight and height were falling off the curves (although he is not LOSING weight.)

Here is a description of his stools.

sometimes the stool is loose or runny but it is not loose or runny all the time. He poops between 4 -7 times per day. About half of his stools have a yellow or orange or grey stain that soaks into the diaper lining and occasionally (but not often) the stain appears on the outside of the diaper. I think i have seen peices of meat and tofu come out whole in his stools.

The stools that have the stain don't actually stick to his bum but they spread out over the whole diaper and become very flat. The stool iteself just sort of peels off the diaper and ds's bum leaving behind a stain. sometimes the stain is much larger than the actual stool. What seems really weird is that the stool is not runny or loose yet there is a a lot of liquid that seeps into the diaper lining. His stools are often pale yellow but are also often darker brown.

Anyway i basically decided all of this was normal since we've been gluten free for two months and since i have tried many different things without seeing any change in his stools yet. My dh said this morning though that he thinks the stools are weird so i don't know what to think now. Our doctor says it is because of the amount of fiber ds eats yet i have decreased the amt of fiber i give him and still see the stains.

sorry for the long post... i'm just so confused.

Our experience was that the stools in the diaper were not loose or runny - the diaper absorbed all of the "looseness" i.e. grease. The color was orangey, mostly, as I recall.

Your insurance doesn't cover the genetic test - is that right? There are other things you can try - your doc can do a fecal fat test on the stool, for example. I wish I could be of more help.

hey thats a pretty good description of mine (minus the diaper part lol) i'm not gonna say that it is cf because i'm no dr but i would concider discussing this with a dr, get him tested for your family's other cf gene just to rule it out, but something isn't right, never been around babies that much but isn't 4-7 stools a day a little much? the orangey yellow film sounds like fat and the fact that you found meat and other proteins in your son's stool sounds like he isn't digesting either very well, cf affects different people different ways so just because he isn't a "typical cf" doesn't mean he doesn't have it, get him tested and try to be as pro active about it as you can, hope this helps

Thanks for the replies.

I think it is very unlikely my son has CF since he had a negative sweat test. I am still worried he could have some food allergy though that is causing him to malabsorb other than gluten or wheat. i guess i was thinking that if i posted here i might get some feedback from parents who had seen greasy and normal stools and might now if what i am observing could be normal.

thanks again!
