Mosquito Bites

DS has always gotten welts from mosquito bites. They don't seem to bother him, but sometimes they just seem to look red an inflamed. Even though we used bug repellent, he got a couple on his leg earlier in the week while at the park. I've tried calamine and clear caladryl and it doesn't seem to do anything -- 'course I'm sure he scratches when we're not looking. Any other suggestions? When he was really little he has a script for zytrec for an allergic reaction, but that was long long ago and I'm really apprehensive about using any oral meds, such as benadryl -- prefer something topical. Any suggestions? Liza

I too, also always get welts from mosquito bites. I find "After Bite" which is a white stick you can get at the drug store is awesome!! Dab a drop on, and the swelling goes down and the itch is gone! It smells bad (ammonia) but it is worth it!!!

I get welts from mosquit bites & then of course I scratch them until they bleed & then they scab over so I look like I have a tropical disease of sorts. They love Jazz also, but not my hubby LOL!

Ok this isn't really CF related but I have to tell it anyway. I used to be on high doses of Predisone for years and years and never got bit by a mosquito, seriously. When I finally was able to taper off the drug and stop taking it completely, mosquitos loved me. I got four bites yesterday just being outside for three minutes!
When my son gets bit, it doesn't really bother him until bedtime, if its bad I will give him a small dose of Benadryl. He freaks out if I put any type of lotion, topical medicine, or anything moist on his skin---so I don't know what really works for other kiddos.

My boys get bitten bad by mosquitoes even with repellant, I guess it just doesnt last long with them sweating so much. We use the childrens Afterbite to relieve any discomfort.

I ran to walmart last night and bought after bite -- primary ingredient is ammonia. There was a kids afterbite and it had eucalyptus as the main ingredient instead. I also got a skeeting stick which had menthol and benzacaine as main ingredients. I realized I had a benydryl stick from last year and it didn't do anything. I also picked up some avenoo cream which was a combination calamine/anesthesia sorta thing. Let him chose after his bath what he wanted -- was terrified of the first two because there were BUGS -- BEES on the packaging. Used the aveeno and one looked pretty good this morning and the other still a little inflamed.

Showed his dad all his bug bite loot and picked the skeeter stick this morning. Liza aka ratatosk

You can buy Citronella (essential oil) this is natural and apply to all pulse points. I use it and never have a problem.

Then I heard on tv that using dryer sheets and putting them in your pocket will keep mosquitoes away. A sheet will repel mosquitoes on your patio. Hang a sheet when outdoors during the mosquito season.

I got told to use the Bounce dryer sheets last year. I was told to rub them on the skin. I tried it while camping last year, it worked great on me and my eldest son, but it irritated the heck out of the twins. Putting them in their pockets may work though, I shall give it a try.

Citronella is great too. all pulse points and that should do the trick. If your kids itched often then I would not even put the dryer sheets on them. If they are somewhat allergic then it will probably make them itch again even though it is not touching their skin. Or I would try buying a different brand dryer sheet.

It doesn't sting at all. It actually feels soothing. My little cousins who are 6 and 10 use it all the time, and have no problems with it.

If you've already been bitten then Benadryl ointment is great. We have a lot of mosquitos in Montreal this year and we are being bitten. The Benadryl ointment is wonderful!
