Ok - my mother-in-law called us tonight to let us know that she tested positive for Pseudomonas thru a sputum culture she had last week. A few questions. Does this mean she will always have it? Does this mean that my 7 week old (with CF) that saw her this past Sunday is in trouble? Are there any outward signs of Pseudomonas that I would notice in my 7 week old? If Pseudomonas is not "cured" with antibiotics does that mean my child can no longer see her? I am so confused! I plan to call the Cf clinic in the morning but I can't sleep and wanted to see if anyone had some answers for me. Thanks. Paula

i honestly dont know for sure....but dont worry im sure she can see your mother in law...just make sure she doesnt cough on her and stuff like that, be extra careful, like kissing, coughing, breathing in the babies face!..and have her wash her hands before she holds the baby (in general bacteria isnt good ya know?)

I have a lot of info for you...so let me start. First of all, I think that your mother-in-law will be able to be cured of it if she is a healthy individual with no compromising disorders. There are several antibiotics out there for Pseudomonas. And I think that you are right to be concerned with having your child be around her. With your child having CF, he/she is definately more suseptible to this infection. When a person with CF is infected with Pseudomonas, it does not go away...or at least that is how I understand it. It is treated with antibiotics, more often Tobramycin (Tobi) through a nebulizer. And then the infection goes dormant until the person's immune system decompensates or the health is compomised. I am a mother of a 6 y/o with CF...and I am also a nurse. My daughter was first infected with Pseudomonas before the age of one. She was treated with nebulizer Tobi, and the infection went dormant. We saw it again this year in March. So she was good for about 5 years. Again...we did the Tobi, and she is doing beautifully. I hope what I have said helps, and none of my information was wrong, but definately speak with the clinic....they are always reassuring...and I know you will feel better. If you have anymore questions or need to vent, you can e-mail me anytime....mhnurse02@yahoo.com. Good luck to you!!

I'm going to go against the anonymous poster who said "I would think your daughter would get it too". Pseudomonas isn't the type of thing that quickly and easily jumps from person to person. Is it possible? Yes. Is it a given, like that post implied? Absolutely not. The most recent post is true- pseudomonas will likely be easily eradicated in your mother in law, since she is an otherwise healthy, non-CF patient.
