Here recently my son has missed a lot of school due to his disease and he is having problems with his bowels. Any suggestions to this problem? The school is giving me a hard time with all the days missed and they do not understand how hard it is on my son to have CF> Anyone elses children have this problem with missed school?

Missing school is just one of the things CFers have to deal with. One year you may miss a lot of school and another not much. You should ask your school's principal about setting up a 504 plan for addressing this and other issues surrounding CF. You social worker should be able to help you get the process started and be able to suggest some things you may want to include in your plan.

If the school is being really crappy about it, have one of the CF doctors contact the school. My school, counselors, teachers, principals, nurse, etc all knew I had CF, and so they never gave me crap about missing so many days.

my 6 year old also has cf and missed, gee I can't even the days like 65. Scholl has been great the send a tutor. It is his Kindergarden teacher. My daughter also has cf but a lot worse, sometimes she has no bowel control, so she may not eeven start scholl next yr. They said if she doesn't they will sen a tutor. hope this helps.

My schools always knew about my CF. My high school had a very strict attendance policy, if you missed more than 10 days per semester then you lost credit for that semister. I talked to the principal about it and this policy was waived in my case. I was prepared to get my CF docotors involved but it wasn't needed. There were a few times when I or my parents had to have words with teachers over my missed days. You just have to stand up for your kids, as long as they keep up with the class then the school shouldn't have issues with abcences.

I also miss a lot of days, but all my teachers know why. Plus I get good grades, so they're fine with it. Maybe, like the other poster said, you should have your son's doctor call?

CF Hockey Mom is right! Go to your school's principal and ask for a "504 Plan" to be put in place for your child. It then follows him through his entire education within that school ssytem. It gets updated every year depending on how his health is. It's a great plan for kids with CF or "other health issues" because it can be designed for your child's specific needs.
