Mouth Irritation from Chewing on Enzymes

This morning DS threw a total FIT. He gives us trouble sometimes with his septra tablet because he doesn't swallow it right away and I thought that's what was giving him problems. That and he's not a morning person -- so he tends to be a bit crabby in the morning instead of his normal sunny self.

Had him spit it out and gave it to him on a spoonful of applesauce. But he still complained, so I told him to swish his water around in his mouth.

He spit out a small enzyme bead and complained his tooth hurt. Apparently he chewed up one of his enzymes. I looked with the flashlight and didn't notice any ulcers, a little tiny red spot that looked as if he had bitten the inside of his cheek, which he probably did.

Got him to brush his teeth and used some ambesol (which made him really annoyed again).

In all the years he's been on enzymes he's never had issues with enzymes irritating his mouth, but he was really upset -- real tears, not his dramatic crocodile ones --- and he's not one to complain about pain. He usually just dusts himself off and goes off to play again.

I guess I wouldn't think that if he did bite into an enzyme that it would burn him that quickly. Usually it has to do with keeping enzymes in ones mouth, not washing down beads, isn't it?

We always did enzymes on applesauce when our 8 year old was younger. We now just pour them in his mouth and he swishes his tongue around and has a drink. Our 3 year old takes them on applesauce and if we happen to be somewhere that we don't have it then we have to pour them into his mouth.

I know that the docs say that it can cause irritation b/c if they chew them they are allowing them to break down. I would just try and always use applesauce, pudding, etc until he is a little older. Hope this helps.

my lo is only 3 months so he still takes them in stuff.. we use a papaya puree. he does get irritated if we didn't get them all sewpt out. I have gentian violet, which is a natural supp. you can get for under $2 it stains the area purple for a day but works great I started using it for thrush and noticed it helped with this too.. it also brings allot of muccus out too.. I call that a plus although it is not recommended to used daily, only as needed.

He's been swallowing his enzymes whole for the past 2-3 years. I'm assuming he inadvertenly bit into one, but again wouldn't think the irritation would be THAT instantaneous, nor could I see any ulcers, or redness...
