MS

Hi Guys,

Sadly my best friend's husband was DX today with Multiple Sclerosis. We are all in shock, most of all my best friend. She is the sweetest, most givingand kind young woman in the world. Their 6 month wedding anniversary is next week! I can't believe that they have to deal with this shock so soon after their marriage. He is just 25! And she's 22. So young. She's so scared about losing him.

So I was taking a long shot here mostly b/c this is really the only access to mass opinions I can get-and I was wondering if any of you have MS in your family, or have it or know of anyone who does. What they have to deal with, life expectancy, support groups, ect. I want to help them as much as I can. I went over to the house today and he and I had a good talk. What we have is obviously very different, but at least he can relate to someone with a chronic illness.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Hi, Christian. Sorry to hear of your friend's husband's diagnosis. My great aunt, two or three times removed, (distantly related, but I grew up with her grandkids as cousins), has MS. She will be 86 next Wednesday and is an amazing woman. She was diagnosed young as well, and lived on her own until she was 75 or so. She is now in an assisted living facility, and over the past two years has required more help as her health has deteriorated.

I can imagine what a shock it must have been for your friend to get this diagnosis. If she and her husband are interested, I'm sure my aunt would be more than happy to talk to them about her experience with the disease. She has a computer and is online, so if you want to PM me, I can pass along an email address to her, or send hers to your friend.

Sorry again to hear this.

Thanks Jenica. The response was appreciated.

I think its a little soon for them to talk to other patients, they are still in shock. Unfortunately they have limited access to email-just through work I think. And she uses mine when she comes over. But I'm going to save this post, and have her PM you later! Thanks so much.

I haven't been on the boards for a long time but I saw your post and had to respond. I am sorry about the diagnosis. MS like so many diseases varies with everyone. My mother was diagnosed in her 30's. She is turning 60 this year and is still mobile and can do what she wants. I knew a girl who was 16 when she was diagnosed and it effected her much more severely. My band teacher had it. My husband's old boss hasit as well as another gentleman in the company. I guess I know many with it...10-15 possibly.

My mother and many of the others are on disability because of the way it affected her body. Many of them suffer from depression and it can become a strain on a marriage. As with other illnesses, just learn what you can about MS and be there for your friend and her husband. There is a long road ahead of them but if they have someone who can kind of understand what they are going through, that will help your friend have someone to confide in, talk to and vent to.

One of my old bosses has it, she's 40 something and got it in her early 30s. She's had a few really bad bouts with it which kind of paralyze her while it's acting up. She has pain meds to take when it gets difficult to deal with, but for the most part she focuses on eating healthy, exericising and does really well. For her stress is a major cause of it acting up so she tried to keep the stress down. The bad bouts seem to come and go.

My grandmother had it too, but there were many other things she dealt with as well, so I won't even get into that.

But all in all, what I've gathered from the one lady I've known who has it is that it varies for everyone and you can live a long active life (like CF) if you're a lucky one. Hope this doesn't sound too harsh, but those are my thoughts on it. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I'm sorry for his diagnosis. Must be very scary to hear such a thing at that age!!!
