How do you know when you have a mucus plug or have coughed one up? Just something I have always been curious about.

I don't have a real good answer to this, but if you every cough up anything like this http://www-medlib.med.utah.edu.../LUNGHTML/LUNG051.html (an alien-like image that has always made my blood run cold) you can be sure you've coughed up a mucus plug...

When I cough on up, I notice that its super thick, and has hard chunks in it. And its usually a darker colour then I'm used to.

Edited to add: that's really gross looking LisaV.

Mine are usually super thick too like a hard chunk of goop! And it is green. Do not get them ofter, considering our mucus is like cement.

I cough up big green gobs. This is not the normal stuff I bing up. My normal stuff is pretty thin almost liquid like with some color. I know it is mucus from my lungs. But once and a while I cough up mucus that is in a glob and very stick...what do you guys think? It doesn't look like an alien more like "the blob".

When my husband coughed up what looked like green algae it was his pseudomonas out of control. Time for inpatient IVs and therapy and all of that...
