Muscle/Joint aches & pains

Would like to know whether anyone else experiences very severe joint and muscle pain early in the morning/late at night?? Lately it has been really bad for me - I have only just completed a course of IV's so don't think its due to a bad infection. The worst it affects at the mo is my knees, fingers and my neck and actually inside my upper back and the muscles in the top of my arms - they feel tight and tender and it hurts to move my arms. I am just relying on Ibuprofen at the moment, taking more than I should and not being able to get out of bed until they have kicked in.
Does anyone have any tips on how to reduce the pain other than Brufen or tips how to relieve. It could be that its Winter and absolutely freezing (I'm in England!) so tonight I am going to leave a heater in my bedroom to see if that helps at all.

Any ideas/advice would be much appreciated!!!

I went through a phase of getting severe joint pain at night, especially when I was going to bed. It used to sometimes wake me up in the middle of the night, and I couldn't sleep. It was worst in my hips and knees. I found keeping very warm helped, and I've pretty much stopped having it. The joint pain can also be due to certain antibiotics- Cipro causes joint pain, among others. The muscle/arm pain- the only thing I can think of is that your arms are still tender from the IVs? Good luck <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Thanks for your response - I will try the keeping very warm thing, will pile on my heaviest pj's! I think I must just be an odd with one with the arm pain as my IV's go through my port in my chest so don't think they would affect my chest.
Thanks v much for ur advice!!

I don't have a clue why you are having joint pain. But it you figure it out let me know. I have also been put on Ibuprofen, because my joints ache so much. I wake often at night because my legs, hips and arms ache so i can't sleep. I live in a mild climate and have increased my exercise to try to help. God Bless and good luck to you.

I have the same problems but with my back and neck as well. Adults with CF are prone to getting a type of osteoarthritis. It is caused from low bone density which can be detected with a bone scan. Most CF centers here in Canada do them to check. Because of the malabsorbtion problems, we may not get enough calcium and vit.D which is required for proper bone formation and maintance. If you are lacking you may have arthritic sympoms as well as a higher risk of fractures. My pain is so bad that Im on Tylonel 3's for the pain but I have started some MSM and glucosomine to help. I would ask your doctors to look into doiing a bone scan to see where you are. Its a simple xray of your arm and hip. It doesnt hurt and takes like 5 minutes. And keep eating your calcium and vitamins!! Good luck guys. Also if you have a had a transplant, there is a higher risk of joint problems because of the immunosuppresive drugs, especially in CF patients.

I also have joint and muscle pain, especially now that I'm on Cipro which is killing my knees. One thing my doctor told me that could contribute to some muscle pain is if you have a lot of air trapping and your lungs are hyper inflated (big problem for me), that puts a strain on some muscles as your chest kinda stretches to try to contain the expanding lungs. I get pain sometimes under my arms, right by my armpits, and he said that's from my shoulders starting to hunch over to make more room for my lungs. He gave me an easy exercise that helps strengthen those muscles: Stand facing a right-angle corner, about a foot or so away from the wall, and put one hand on each wall at about shoulder height. Lean forward into the corner, supporting yourself with your hands on the walls, and hold that position for several seconds. Repeat this several times. This exercise uses those muscles under your arms, I found doing it daily got rid of the pain there. Of course it doesn't do anything for knees and other areas, but at least it's something!

Do any of you take folic acid? I used to get really bad aches and pains, sometimes so bad I couldnt get out of bed. I then started taking folic acid and that seems to help I still get aches but not as bad where i cant get out of bed. well just a thought
