I'm new to this site, but I have two children with CF. My daughter who is six, and my son who is two. I've been told from day one to add the calories, and that it's great if they're a little big, so weight was never an issue, until our last appointment. My daugher weighed 61 lbs, and my son was 40 lbs. This, I thought was great - until i was told they need to stop gaining. Anybody think this is odd? They both have two copies of the most common CF mutation, I forget what it is right now, I think 508 - Has anyone else ever been told to limit calories? I hate to do it, my daughter has since lost four pounds, and that's not what I like to see

Hi. I have a similar issue. My son is a Double Delta 508 like your children. He was diagnosed at 8 days old and was severely pancreatic insufficient at birth and was not even on the charts.

But now, he just turned three and weighs 44 pounds. He is big, broad and solid with a belly to boot. We are thrilled because he is doing so well weightwise and so is our clinic for the most part. We did cut down to 2% milk and now I am thinking we may go down to 1%? I always think about cutting back the fat but then I read all the G tube stories ect... and it scares me. What does your clinic say?

Megan, mom to Aidan 3 w/CF and Gavin, no CF

Well, they're saying they want them to stop gaining, and maintain their weight. I'm more worried that one of them will end up sick and lose weight, then we're back to square one. I don't want to confuse them, especially my daughter, when it comes to weight. I've spent the last four years telling her that she's such a good eater, and the doctors are so happy with her "growing" - now she's going backwards and wondering why i'm weighing her every week. I just think it's calling too much attention to weight at a young age.

I can't believe they would be telling u they are overweight. WOW..... goes against everything I have always been told and read.....but I think some doctors are changing their minds about all the fats. They think it can cause more problems, example diabeties.....

My belief is, that it has been proven that more weight equals better lung functions..... And just by hearing their weight does not sound like they are at all FAT...... We ALWAYS push food and would continue doing so, even if the doctor ever said not to......it's worked so far for us.
