MY FEV1

I don't have CF. But I am obviously a carrier. I never had asthma or anything, but in the last 6 months I've been increasingly short of breath and struggling a bit. I've been taking a rescue inhaler 5 or more times a day for many weeks now. I finally went to the doctor today and my FEV1 was 30% -- is this as bad as it seems?? She put me on symbicort to see if we can get the numbers up. But I can't shake the feeling that maybe this is related to my CF carrier status. Gosh, I just don't get it. Anyone have any insight??

Out of curiosity, how was it determined that you don't have CF? Is it possible that you've acquired a lung infection? Before I was dxd with CF I had a rapid decline in lung function resulting in SOB over about 6 months to a year. A bronchoscopy revealed a MAC (mycobacterium avium complex) infection. People without CF can get MAC too! It was only during the course of my treatments that I was referred to the CF center, the thought being that maybe some of the treatments available for CF patients would help me regain my lung function. I had genetic testing to 'rule out' CF. Ha Ha. I ended up being diagnosed.

another possibility could be your technique. it takes years to master this. if you tried it again with more "practice" you could get higher numbers. just a thought.

also, yes, have you been tested?

Well no, I haven't been tested for CF. Only for the two genes my daughter has. And I have one of them.

I am quite overweight and I've never been hospitalized for a lung infection (though I am quite prone to colds that go directly to my lungs and last for weeks). So when I mentioned to the CF center that I was concerned that my other son might be more than a carrier, they pretty much laughed at me because in order for him to have it, since he's been tested for my daughter's two gene's and has my husband's only that I would have to have it. They felt this was not likely at all.
