my kid's culture

My kid's nurse called today to say that both Jack and Sophia are culturing MRSA. Neither one has cultured it before. Shocked to say the least that they are both culturing it. I was hoping they would never have deal with MRSA. They started clindamycin tonight. Sophia is easy, she has a button. The pharmacist warned me it tastes pretty bad. She was right. Jack is all but refusing to take it. I need some advice on how to get it down him. Anyone gone through this? They also want me to give it to the kids every 8 hours. That just doesn't make sense with kids.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 8 and Jack, 5 both with cf, Grant, 6 months no cf

Medicine dosing schedule can't be adjusted to fit the age of the patient. Pls take this seriously and give at every 8 hrs. 6am, 2pm and 10pm is when I do every 8 meds.

My son and I, both with cf, both deal with MRSA. I hope you can get rid of it but we both are colonized with it. For my son who is 2, he gets MRSA diaper rashes and when he gets a cold that turns into a cough we treat it with Bactrim with great results thus far. We have never taken antiobiotics with no cough as it sounds like you are doing but maybe by catching it early you will get rid of it.

It's all over your house by now though. While on antibiotics could you bleach sterilize the house and wash all linens with bleach or on very hot wash and dry? Good luck!

In terms of advice about giving the meds. Could you reward him with a special pc of candy that he only gets after taking his meds. My son gets a Pez dispenser filled with only 3 pcs of candy for cf tasks that he resists.

UGH Sharon, I'm sorry to hear this news. I hope that you can erradicate the MRSA. Alyssa also has a button, so I'm not the best person to give advice. I have in the past gone back to the pharmacy to have them add more flavoring. I've also mixed each dose with some sugar or lemonade mix to make it more palatable.

Good luck!!!!

Did you ask the pharmaist about getting flavoring? I know its cost 3-6 bucks extra, but its words wonders. (the banana taste the best)

I agree the times you take the meds doesn't matter -that just indicates how fast the drug wears down and when you need to does again. But the strength is based on weight/height. SO make sure your giving it every 8 hours.
