my son has had 3 colds in 10 weeks

Okay, my son had a newborn screening for CF, but was negative. My CF doc said this isn't absolute, but pretty reliable. Anyway, while my son had a cold at two weeks, we saw his pediatrician, who was not concerned. Since then he's had two more "colds." They consist of snotty, congested nose and a little coughing. A very slight fever, if any.

So, should I do further CF testing? Oh yeah, Alex was in the 10th percentile for weight when he was born 3 weeks early and is now in the 25th percentile. Could this just be normal colds or allergies? Can anybody relate with a non-CF child?

You will, of course, have to make the decision on whether or not to pursue further testing for CF... although as someone with CF, I assume if you know your mutations, this make the process a little simpler for you.

Anyway- I can speak to this:<div class="FTQUOTE"><begin quote>Could this just be normal colds or allergies? Can anybody relate with a non-CF child?</end quote></div>

My son Timothy- who we know through gene testing doesn't have the mutation the other two have- had bug after bug after bug as a baby, starting with his first cold and ear infection at 4wks old. He continued to get repeat colds/viruses that would turn into ear infections or bronchitis, including epiglottitis due to HIB flu at 8mo (he hadn't yet received his full course of vaccinations yet to protect him against this serious illness.) This continued until he was well past a yr old and finally started improving by about 18mo. He finally reached a point where, other than lactose intolerance lasting another yr or so, brought on by that constant abx use, he wasn't sick any more often than a typical kid. He does have significant seasonal allergies that we started seeing a pattern with as a preK age. He takes Claritin at some times and Flonase spray.

He had started out big at 7.5lbs and 20.5" long at only 36wks (he shocked everyone to be that big so early- an u/s suggested he would only be about 5lbs!) After that he quickly established a growth curve on the 25% and has stayed there ever since (and is now 10.) Photos of him as a baby- and now- show a long, skinny noodle! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> He is just clearly a very healthy looking noodle, unlike the one my dd turned into before dx (she was a pale, limp piece of spaghetti, to go with the analogy.)

Sorry to go on for so long, but wanted to let you know that I completely understand what it's like to have a little one that gets sick all the time. I was at my wits' end with him (he was also colicky!) It was such a relief when it resolved.

We tested him, but I believe it was only either 85 or 90 percent of the mutations. Also, I don't think it helps knowing my mutations, because he'll for sure have that, even as a carrier...
