My son Grant has had really bad breath recently and I'm not sure what to do to help it. I brush his teeth constantly and try to make him drink plenty of water but it doesn't help. He is not sick right now but I was wondering if he could be culturing something new. He had his adnoids removed in June and it got better after that. Lately it has been terrible and I feel so bad for him. Any suggestions would be great. People(esp some relatives) have been mean about it. I ask his pediatrician and he had absolutely no suggestions. Help

When my kids were small I could always tell when they had an ear infection before they were really symptomatic because of how their breath smelled. I told our pediatrician about that and he kind of laughed but he found that I was right 100% of the time. It might be worth a trip to your CF team.

Could be sinuses. Could be thrush...

Does he still have his tonsils -- no cf, but I used to have chronic tonsilitis and sometimes the tonsoliths (white curds of infection) used to break off and smell dreadful. Do you see any white spots on his throat.

I think others have said bad breathe in CFers could mean a bacteria infection...Maybe a trip to
the CF clinic would be good.
Sharon, mom of Sophia, 10 and Jack, 8 both with CF, Grant, 2 and Paige, 1 both without CF

My son (age two) also has bad breath. I've concluded that it is sinus related. We are currently using saline nasal spray twice a day. The breath seems to improve for a short while after the "squirt". We've also been told to rub Neosporin under his nose. I haven't seen any improvement from that yet.

I agree with Liza...could possibly be thrush. I've gotten thrush before from being on a variety of antibiotics. Maybe this is something to bring up to a dentist? I used to have really dry mouth with bad breath and my dentist recommended a certain kind of toothpaste & mouth wash. Just a thought.

Hugs to you

My son was having really bad breath before he got his tonsils/adenoids out and then the bad breath came back a few months later. Turns out his adenoids had grown back. He had them removed again and it had been better. Although he does get bad breath before a sinus infection.
