Nasal discharge (a.k.a. snot!) :p

Out of curiosity, is nasal discharge thicker for an individual with CF as opposed to one without CF? My daughter has a runny nose as does her brother (no CF)...I'm assuming they caught the same "bug". There is no difference in the consistency of their discharge. Have you noticed a difference between your children with CF compared to another child without CF?

Both of my boys almost never have runny noses, even when they are sick. The only time their noses run are if they are sick and near the ocean That salt air really helps get it out.
I believe it is best to get the nose running....so I make sure to be spraying their noses extra with hypertonic saline nasal spray <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.amazon.com/Simply-Saline-Sterile-Allergy-Relief/dp/B000GCHSCU/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=hpc&qid=1275718392&sr=8-1

I didn't get a runny nose ever, till I started on pulmozyme and hypertonic saline! I think it varies between patients, but snot does tend to be thickened too as the mucous is also subject to faulty CFTR in the sinuses.

DS rarely has a runny nose -- maybe if he's been playing outside in the winter. Even as a baby his nasal mucus was so thick and we'd have to use the dreaded bulb syringe to get it out. The first time he used pulmozyme at the age of 2 1/2 I was AMAZED that his nose was actually running it was such a novelty.

When he turned 4 we were able to get him to do sinus rinses, which has helped a great deal to help clear out all that nasal mucus.

I guess it just varies across the board! Love the lack of consistency among CF symptoms!! Ellie has had a constant runny nose for the past few days. We've upped the CPT. Perhaps I should be grateful that she has a runny nose?
