Nasal Polyps and Sinus Issues

Our daughter Kasey, age 7, is recovering nicely from her first nasal surgery. She is such a trooper about squirting that whole bottle of saline up her nose (ewww).

My son Jacob (9) has had 4 (or 5? I lose count...) and will probably need another one in a few months. The issue is nasal polyps. Left unchecked, they can grow into the nasal cavities and cause damage to the bone structure of the nose and, in extreme events, grow into the eye cavities. (Not trying to scare anyone here, just be sure to get those CT scans every now and then.)

So, we have them removed but then they grow back within a few months (in my son's case; daughter is unknown at this point) so it's back to surgery. They do nasal rinses daily as well as nasal steroids (rhinocort) plus oral Singulair. These are the only suggestions the ENT can offer. They do say that they have seen kids outgrow it.

Has anyone else had experience with this and what do your docs say about it? Nasal surgery twice a year is such a bummer.

Thanks.

hello, my daughter is a major sinus polyps fan it seems as well, gets them all the time but my doc doesn't remove them unless they are causing problems.....but she uses Nasonex & astelin so maybe you can speak to your doc about that. my little one tried the rhinocort but it did absolutely nothing for the polyps but went to nasonex & they have kinda eased...i also wonder why the doc would be so proactive about removing them. we do get ct scans every clinic visit to make sure they arent getting out of control but my ent works with my clinic because they are in the same building.

hope this helps.

1. Rhinocort is a very very weak intranasal steroid. Switch to Nasacort AQ or Flonase (but flonase contains alcohol which can cause nose bleeds)

2. Get allergy tested. Most CFers have many underlying allergies. Skin testing is the ONLY way to get allergy tests accurately. See my blog on how to control allergies once diagnosed (HEPA air filter in the bedroom, dust mite encasings on the pillows and matress, anti-dust mite powder on the carpet, etc).

3. Get on allegra. There is a peds dose that goes down to 2 years old.
