Nasal polyps

My daughter 3 1/2 with Cf just had an appiontment with her Cf doc. she has had a gross boogery nose(only on one side for about 2 weeks) , She also has had an occasional cough(she usually does not cough unless somethings brewing). Anyway the doc thought she might have a nasal polyp. Anyone have experience with this? He recommended this hypertonic saline nasal irrigation thing to do to keep her sinuses clean . We haven't tried it yet, it's something you make yourself.

Any experience is appreciated.

Otherwise Maggie is doing good. He cultured her so hopefully she's not growing something new. Her weight and growth is great. I'm just nervous waiting for her culture report to come back.

Once when we had a local CF clinic appointment DS developed a boogery nose a couple days before and the pulmonologist whom I can't stand told me that DS had polyps. A few weeks later we went to our primary CF doctor in the City and he said DS didn't have polyps, but DID have a nasty sinus infection and prescribed a month course of Cipro to get rid of it once and for all. I hadn't been too concerned about his boogery nose that he seemed to get every winter for the first couple of years because I figured some kids are boogery all winter long. Doctor said, he was concerned that it could move into his lungs and cause worse problems.

So Cipro knocked out the infection. We do use Simply Saline (3% hypertonic solution), it's an aerosol. Seems when he's on Tobi, we notice he gets boogery. Not an infection, but typical toddler, digging up the nose for gold. Ewww! The reason we use the simply saline is because I noticed that when I've used regular saline nasal spray that sometimes it acts like a bulb syringe and backwashes, sucks stuff back into the bottle. Don't like the idea of something nasty growing in DS's saline.

My Bro-in-law just had sinus surgery and was prescribed the saline washes you mix up yourself. I think the bottle of solution is cleaned out after each use.

Take her to an Ear, Nose and Throat doctor. Your cf center is sure to have a doctor to recommend to you. Our cf doctor thought he saw polyps in my daughter's nose. We then went to the ENT doctor who used some instruments to look into her nose. Thankfully, she didn't have any.

We do the nasal irrigations. We mix 1 tsp of baking soda (arm & hammer red label only) with 2 tsps of salt (not table salt, the kind with no iodine) in a clean mason jar with 1 quart of sterile water. We use half in the am/half in the pm with a nasal aspirator. HTH.

The Saline washes are the salt/baking soda and water. it says it does not have to be sterile water, just tap or bottled water. I think cause there is so much salt in the solution bacteria wouldn't grow?

for the hypertonic saline solution, use ENT sol, its great! its better then simply saline b/c it kills infection too.. you can read about it/buy it here: http://www.entsolwash.com/products/products.htm

if your daughter does have polyps, get/go to an ear nose throat doc and get her checked out. just know that polyps are like weeds, they can grow back fast, and once you take them out you'll prolly get them again. i've had 6 surgeries to get them out. so wait as long as you can to take them out. i usually wait until i can't breathe, but im older so it might be more uncomfortable for your daughter earlier on. hope i helped! feel free to private message me with questions!

My daughter was diagnosed with CF because they found nasal polyps in her nose. Her doctor said she would need surgery but after using fluticasone nasal spray for two months the polyps have shrunk to almost nothing. I'm not sure that this can work for everyone but what a difference for us.

Thank you for all your replies. Her nose did seem a little better yesterday before the wash, it's hard to say if it helped her yet, I tried it last night and she was very cooperative.

katie ,
thanks for the link to buy the solution. I'll see how Maggie does with the nasal wash solution, we have an appointment in Sept to see her CF doc and i'll see what he thinks about an ENT consult, as long as Maggie gets bettter(not worse).

I have had a polyp off and on now for years, when I am taking a steroid nasal spray on a regular basis the size of the polyp shrinks sometimes it goes away completely.

Good Luck with the saline nasal treatments. I hope that does the trick for her.

You need to boil the water if you are mixing your own nasal irrigation solution, because pa grow in water therefore can infect sinus. I personally have had 8 sinus surgeries several of them were to remove polyps. From what I am told they are quite common amongst CFers. I am suppose to irrigate 2 times a day but it is the most horrible feeling, I do irriggate when ever I am having sinus issues and it does seems to help..I buy distilled water from the store easier.

Thanks,

I did remake a batch and boiled the water. Maggie doesn't seem to mind the nasal irrigation. Her nose does seem better but she still has an occasional dry cough.(She usually does not cough unless something's brewing) I figure I'ld see what her culture report is Monday and ask about the dry cough, anything else I can do.
