Nausea & Vomitting

Our daughter has CF and is 3 yrs old. She often has bouts of nausea and will occasionally vomit. She saw a gastro and had a barium but everything was normal. This has been going on since Feb and she saw the gastro in April. Because she is still complaining she is going to see the gastro again. There is thought that it might be reflux but the tests were neg. in April and I don't want to put her through it again. Has anyone had a similar experience? What was the problem? How do we solve it?They are also considering a probiotic for her. What has been your experience with this?Thank you.

I forgot to mention that she has frequent sinus infections and has been on Zantac (acid reducer) for about a year.

They need to check your daughter for delayed stomache emptying, also known as Gastroparesis. This will cause vomiting, weight loss, and Nausea. It seems to be getting more common in CF for some reason. All she has to do is eat radioactive eggs and they watch and see how fast they go down. If it takes longer than it should for the eggs to go down, they diagnose Gastroparesis. When the food takes too long to empty into the small intestines and the food just kinda sits in the tummy and will cause Vomiting. Thats my only suggestion so far! Also, does she have problems with Blockages? Constipation can cause Nausea and Vomiting if there is a blockage

Does she do this no matter what different types of foods she is eating. I'm just wondering if she ate bland type foods, i.e. oatmeal, bananas, crackers, etc if that would make any difference at all??

Hi,
I could have written this message a year ago. Our daughter, now 4, had the same problem last year. The nausea and vomitting was usually only in the morning....to the point where we were nervous to go out for breakfast because she kept vomitting at the table.
We went to see a gastro but I don't remember taking a reflux test. The Zantac did not work for her so they gave her prevacid and it helped. We have tried reducing the prevacid dosage in the past and it did not work, but a few weeks ago we tried again and she seems to be doing well.
At the same time we also started her on a probiotic (bacid) and we recommend it to everyone. She had less chest, sinus and ear infections once she started it. I'm not sure if it helped the "reflux"....I think we started it around the same time as the bacid.
Ask if you can try something besides the zantac, even if the reflux tests were negative. You have nothing to lose.
