Apparently its a new "gene" that helps bacteria to mutate and cause superbugs that are resistent to all known antibiotics. This seems it would be troubling in the CF community. Has anyone heard anything about this???

Here's one link, I tried googling to find the most credible links. If anyone knows anything better, I'd like to read it.

I was just reading about this myself. Does seem a little scary. I didn't read the article from your link but what I was reading suggested it was spreading partly because of people from Britain and other countries using "medical tourism" in India, where there is "an irrational use of antibiotics". Apparently it is already widespread in Pakistan and India.

~sorry if that's exactly what your link says~

Hi Heather,
I was googling this tonight to try to find articles that link it to CF...no luck so far, but I'm sure they will be coming. Something else to think about...UGH!

Yikes... this does sound scary. Another article is here:

Scientists find new superbug spreading from India

There have been a couple cases in the US as well, all in individuals who had traveled to India for medical care.

I don't know about 'specific' links to cf, but implications seem pretty clear... if, using the example mentioned in the first article, resistant e.coli capable of causing fatal pneumonia infects someone w/ cf vs. someone in the general population w/ a healthy pair of lungs, I don't like thinking about who has better odds of surviving.
