Hello! I just posted the message about looking for a pen-pal for the 9yr old girl. I have been working with this girl for about 2 weeks, and I need some advice. She feels pretty isolated from the kids in her class. The job of informing her classmates about CF has rested solely on her shoulders. Her parents won't come in to talk to the class, and she has difficulty answering the many questions they have. I would like some feedback on how you guys have handled informing your peers about CF. Does anyone know of a good video I could show? Did someone come and talk to your class? I would love to hear about your experiences and any suggestions you might have. Thanks!

<STRONG><FONT color=#008000 size=3>There is a wonderful children's book called "Mallory's 65 Roses" that is a perfect book to read to the kids. That is how we told my daughters classmates. We also made sure there was a counselor in the room while we discussed it. Look on the internet and see if you can find the book, I would offer to send you the one I had, but I recently sent it to another family with CF kids.Seana</FONT></STRONG>

When i was in high school, My doctor think i should tell my class about cf because i needed oxygen in school. So than my physiotherapist and nurse came to school and told my class and i show the oxygen tube. Everything went fine. I was very happy afterwards <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Perhaps a social worker or nurse from her clinic could come to class to discuss questions with her. Kids are very inquisitive, and I can understand (first hand) how overwhelming questions from an entire classroom about CF are! I guess one wonderful thing about children, though, hopefully that this particular little girl will find, is that once they know and somewhat understand what her problem is, they will be more concerned about her than uncomfortable.

Hey! When I was in fifth grade our class had to do reports on different diseases which was a perfect opportunity for me to explain what I have to go through w/ CF. I read a book about it and then read a report about my treatments and stuff. I think it would be a great idea if she maybe worked something up and presented it to her class.

When I was in the 3rd grade, I had a social worker and nurse come into my class to speak with the kids. They were able to answer all the questions the kids had, and put any worries at ease. The problem I had always had with kids at that age, was that they assumed I was contagious and was going to die right away. The nurse reassured them that this wasn't the case.
