Need help for a friend

My friends son has had several of the same issues as my children. Constipation, asthma, frequent pnemonia, lingering cough and random wierd infections. She knows her brother is a cf carrier but no other known family hx. She was screened during her pregnancy and was neg. (I am assuming for the most common ones). I recommended she ask for a sweat test. He had it yesterday and was told it was negative at 24 & 25. Her Dr. said anything under 60 was negative.(He obviously gave her incorrect info so is uninformed about cf).

My reaction was see a pulm. and get genetic testing. Am I overreacting? She doesn't know what to do. Does alot of the population test in the 20's?? Any imput would be great. Thanks!

IMO if he has symptoms enough to warrant testing, then he deserves to have it completely ruled out and she deserves the peace of mind. The sweat test isn't really gonna do that, and with a 24/25 I'd be concerned enough to ask for genetic testing. It could very well NOT be CF, but if I were her, I wouldn't want to miss it either.

I agree with Heather. IN addition ANY testing (sweat test or genetic) needs to be done by an accredited CF center to assure fewer errors.

I agree that your friend should persue the full panel genetic test. It really is the only way to completely rule out CF.
