My daughter is is kindergarten. The school is doing everything they are expexted to as far as her meds, bathroom breaks, snacks and things like that. Our problem is she has missed so many days this yr. My daughter has lots of digestive problems. For some reason the school isnt wanting to do the 504 plan. They say it want help with her absences. I understand if she is sick she needs to go to the doc but we arent going to take her to the doc because she is vomiting in the morning. We need help with this ASAP. They are really breathing down our next about her attendance.

Have you spoken to the social worker at your CF clinic?

Each state is a little different regarding 504 plans and health plans in school. My experience was we needed to start with a letter from my daughter's pediatrician stating she had health issues that were chronic and severe enough to affect her in school. It was the school nurse that requested the 504 plan.

In my state absences are specifically addressed in the state law. For every 5 cumulative days absence (excused with a doctor note) or after 10 consecutive school days absent my daughter is entitled to a home bound instructor 1 hour per day absent. Each state is different on this and we have this law quoted in my daughter's plan. The key is this state law only applies if the child has a 504 plan or Iep before the absences. My daughter is a gifted student straight As. The school argued with me about the tutor. They actually had to compensate with a tutor all summer one year because they violated her plan. My daughter needs the tutor to work with the teachers to decrease the makeup work so she stays on track with her classes not to actually teach the material. We actual decline tutor days now if they are not needed and use the tour time for her to make up exams so she isn't missing more class time taking a test she missed and then missing the lab lecture etc on the next topic to be learned.

We reevaluate each plan at the beginning of the next school year and I request a copy of signatures from all her teachers whether or not they attend the meeting stating they read her 504 plan.

ive also hear people on here get legal advice specifically for CF issues, others will hopefully chime in on that.

best wishes

We are in your boat too. We had a lot of nausea in the beginning of the year. Our 504 addresses (inadequately) the absence issues. Justin a sugession, have they considered bacterial overgrowth? Justin had that until a month or so ago from all of the antibiotics and had nausea every day. We have had a hard time getting the teacher to follow giving missed work for each day he misses becaues it is "difficult" if he misses for her to get everything done. I wanted to remind her that my Super Hero of a son "gets it all done" with regards to all the treatments and pills when it seems overwhelming for a 2nd grader. I did talk to a friend that is the social worker for the local CF center (we go to Hopkins) and she said that 1. Call the CF legal network for advice on how to address the issues and 2. Have your 504 reviewed and ask for the revisions you need. I get your frustration and will keep you in my prayers.

something that may help each of you. My daughter is in 8th grade so the work load of missed work has increased over the years while her late to school, absences, doctor appoint,ENTs have also increased. A few accommodations we have added to her plan.

1. Absences and lates are excused medical if I email the school nurse and cc her pediatrician on the same E-mail. No reason to take a sick kid to a germ infested pediatrician or CF office.

2. We have a fill in the blank log her guidance counselor created. For each known absence I email the teacher at least 2 school days
, but typical the week before about the absence, then the day before the known absence ( usually a doctor appointment or first of the morning lab work regardless of the entire day missed or part of the day) my daughter takes the log to each of the teachers whose class she will miss and they have to write her makeup work. Anything they do not write she is not responsible to make up and the material missed she cannot be tested on. This forces the teachers to think ahead and lesson plan for her.

3. For last minute absences or late arrivals, early dismissals that are medical related she takes the log to each teacher and they must write the makeup work on it anything not written is not made up and not tested. She has 3 school days to make up the work or get a deal in writing on the log with her teacher as to when she will do the makeup work. If she is overwhelmed but how much makeup work is written then the guidance counselor works with the teachers to decrease the work or stays after school with her to proctor make up exams or has a home bound instructor come to our home.

Best wishes

By the way with the teachers having to put the makeup work in writing they write very little and excuse a ton of work. My daughter continues to get perfect math and near perfect reading scores on our stated wide testing, so you would be amazed how much makeup work is redundant and review that can be skipped if the child understood the concept the first time presented.

When I was in school (which was several years ago, I am 26 now), my mom had the doctor write a note saying I would miss a lot of school and not necessarily go to the doctor every time. Discuss that with your CF doctor and perhaps that will suffice. I was very healthy as a child, but I did have a lot of digestive issues as well. I was always in the gifted programs and far ahead of my peers in test scores, but they still gave my mom a hard time about absences. I am just now learning how hard my mom worked for me and appreciate it greatly. Be encouraged that being your child's advocate pays off. No one will love your child like their mom does!
