Hi there,

So, We had clinic Monday. GI doctor want's to take him off Prevacid...and back onto Zantac twice a day. GI doc told me he would fax in a prescription to our local Walgreens. Husband tried picking it up early this week, but Walgreens never got the prescription. I didn't believe it so I called Walgreens turns out they noted it but it's not covered by insurance. It's an over the counter drug. Just wanted to know if any of your little guys are on Zantac 75 twice a day?? Waiting on clinc to call me back. Don't want to give him the wrong thing....Doctor made it sound like it was prescription form. Thanks in advance..

Prevacid is also available otc, so we had some trouble getting insurance to cover it. The dr had to kind of make a stink (I think they used the argument over the high doses our kids needed- Emily needs a lot more than the packaged otc dosage) to get it covered by insurance. It took a month but eventually we got it covered. It needs to have special authorization done every so often but at least we are able to get it covered.

I hope you are able to work this out.

My son was on zantac 2x/day a few months ago but gastro doc switched him to prevacid 2x/day. He said prevacid was better for him than the zantac. Do you know why your dr wants to take him off prevacid? I have wondered why some are on prevacid, and some are on zantac.

Forgot to add, zantac was not covered by insurance since it's otc. You can get it pretty economically at Wal-Mart if you buy the bottle with 108 tablets. Our insurance will only cover prevacid if it's the dissolvable tablet since that is not available otc. We ended up just using the otc since it was cheaper than the insurance.

We've used the OTC meds for a long time. Even when ins did cover the script, it was cheaper to buy OTC, and just take the dose the doctor prescribed, than to pay the ins co-pay. Our doc is fine with us doing it this way.

My son has been on zantac since he was 6 weeks old. Dr tried to switch to prevacid and said it would work better. Insurance refused to cover the prevacid. We paid out of pocket and my son was miserable. The prevacid did not work at all. So each kid is different. If zantac works I would appeal the insurance or have someone from the clinic call on your behalf.

My son was on Zantac as a baby. Then they switched him to Prevacid a year ago. Now, The GI doc tells us Prevacid can cause diarrhea. So, now were back on Zantac twice a day. I was just asking because I was nervous to just buy something for adults. (The Zantac) Made me nerves because his such a little guy. Clinic called and confirmed to just buy regualar Zantac 75.

My daughter takes prescription zantac (ranitidine), and it is prescription and covered under our insurance because it is a syrup for dosing babies, rather than a pill like the OTC version. So, it's available both by prescription and OTC, but in different forms/strengths.
