My dd had open heart surgery in feb. after the surgery she started gaining weight with the diet she was on. Now she stopped , she is not losing but not gaining neither. She is 5 months old and is 10 1/2 pounds and the doc said she should be 13 0r more. We think she is teething ,would that have something to do with it ?She acts like her mouth is sore and tries to shove her fist in her mouth. The doc. said if she don't gain weight by her next visit he wants to put her on a feeding tube at nite so she dosen't skip any feedings. Any advise would be apreciated.

I'm not sure about the weight issue, is she on enzymes? Is she breast fed and are you fortifying or is she on formula. How is her reflux? Ellie was breastfed and I was fortifying up until a month ago, pumping wasn't working so we had to switch over to formula. We use enfamil with iron but make it 24 calories. I also had rice cereal because her reflux was pretty bad so we use it to thicken (she likes the banana flavor, rice cereal also adds extra calories). We use about 3 tablespoons to a 4.5 bottle, it is pretty thick, so we had to make the hole in the nipple bigger. Our doctor also recommended adding 1ml of mct oil this is a prescription but before we got the prescription we used corn oil (mazola) to each bottle (shake it well, so she doesn't notice, this is a little extra fat. When we have done this (and she doesn't burn extra calories because she is breathing so fast) she gains approximately 4-8oz in a week. Ellie also likes her bottle pretty warm, she can be soooo picky. Have you tried her on any solids. My peditrician also says it's okay to give her half strength apple juice (yay...extra calories) I'm also trying to figure out what a scandishake is, but she still might be a little young for that.

Ellie is doing the same exact thing with her fist, she even gags herself sometimes and makes herself throw up. Every toy she grabs also goes straight to her mouth. She's also drooling a bit, we think she might be teething too. She will have nothing to do with a teething ring though. She really likes cold paper towels or oral swabs (not the flavored kind), she also will suck in a frozen carrot (the big ones, not the baby ones). I haven't tried baby orajel yet but I am thinking about it. We haven't seen any teeth yet, but it seems to make her feel better. I hope this helps. When is your next doctors visit? Hopefully you'll have a couple of weeks to try to put weight on her. Is it the type of feeding tube that goes down her nose? Ellie had one of those on one of her hospital stays for a couple of days. It did bother her, but I know it was because she wasn't used to it.

My daughter was on a feeding tube from 3 months old to 7 months old. She was vomiting and refusing to eat. What we didn't know at the time was that it was caused by a milk allergy. But the feeding tube was such a blessing! It helped her gain the weight she needed.

My daughter is now 6 and she got the feeding tube again a yr ago. She has gone to -5% bmi to now 85% bmi (also with the help of megace). It is a difficult decision to get a feeding tube, but it is sooo worth it!

Sarah ,
Yes she is taking enzymes. And she is on enfamil with iron we add powder enfamil also to give her more calores. They had us adding scandical powder to her milk but had us stop. They told us to start giving her rice cereal at her last visit.
Yes the feeding tube is the one that goes down her nose ,if she has to get one they said we would only put it in at night. She has to go on tuesday and she has not been eating good ,i think its because her gums are sore.
She is going just to check her weight and i know she has not gained.
Thanks Sarah i think were going to try your carrot trick.

Sharon, did your daughter have it in all the time or did you have to put it in?
They want us to put it in , does it hurt them when you put it in?
Thanks you guys for your support.
