My son is 2 and has been having an awful time with many GI problems with his CF. He has been treated for severe reflux (GERD) since he was a month old, delayed gastric emptying, vomiting everyday, and very poor weight gain. He is on alot of meds>>> Zantac, Reglan, and Prilosec. He had a GJ tube placed in April of this year. He has thrown up so many times that he has aspirated, and has been treated for worsening lung problems now. He tests positive for P.A. alot so he's been on Tobi for awhile also. He was just discharged from a lengthy hospital stay( #6 for 2003) and now they want to do a Nissen fundoplication, I have heard many good and bad things about this surgery, I am very interested in hearing from anyone who has had this done, THANK YOU Donna, Mom of Mikey( 2 w/cf) and Hannah (5 w/o CF)

Donna,We really had a tough time with the nissan when our daughter got it but in the end I think it was exactly what she needed at the time. She also had a g-tube placet at this time. Feel free to read about our experience with it on our site. http://groups.msn.com/TeamRachelJane Andrea

Hi,i also have a 2 yr old son with cf, i myself had the nisson fundoplication 4 yrs ago because i refluxed so severly ( also my dad had cancer of the esphagus due to reflux) at first i loved the surgery, little rough not being able to throw up when i was pregnant. and giving up pop at first but the good out weighed the bad. last spring had my yearly endoscopy found out that it had unwrapped and nisson had failed. reflux started back up, throwing up etc! my internist has me on a couple meds and it seems to be under control at this time . i live in Eastern Washington, dr thought about sending me to Seattle for another nisson, right now i dont have enough sick leave from work ,its all used up for my son. so for now its just meds.hope that helpsamy mom to nathan 28 months with cf

My son(now 6) had similar problems and finally had a Nissan and g-tube at 18 mos. It IS a big surgery but it has had a very positive effect on his life. It did need to be re-done a year later, but we became very cautious about how much we put in his stomach at one time and no more problems. We also put him back on the reflux meds (Zantac and Reglan) after the 2nd surgery-belt and suspenders according to his surgeon-but we were taking no chances on failure. It was a really hard decision to make, but it turned out for the best. Best of luck to you !

My grandson had a Fundoplication done when he was 6 months old...he is now 6 years old. The Fundoplication has lasted for nearly 5 years but came unwrapped within the last year. He, too, has CF and LOTS of GI problems. He had a GJ Tube placed in July, 2003. It has done good until yesterday. My grandson is going to Children's Hospital today to have some tests run to see if the GJ Tube has an obstruction, broken, or worked its way out of the intestines. He may end up having another Fundoplication and placement of another GJ Tube. Best Wishes to you and your family.
