Need Tips on Coughing

Okay I give I thought I could maybe figure out a way to solve the problem myself, but have had no luck.

I need some tips or some ideas to help me when I cough. I usually cough hard when I do cough. My upper stomach muscles get a good work out. The problem I ALWAYS get the urge to vomit. I know not a pleasant thought, but I cough hard a few times and am fighting the urge to vomit. I end up huffing and puffing to try and stop coughing, so that my stomach muscles will relax and the urge will go away.

By the time this is over I am exhausted mainly from having to fight the vomit feeling. Sometimes I do indeed throw up others I am lucky and able to calm my body down before I get to that point. I just know it can't be good that I am getting that urge all the time. I am not talking after coughing for 5 - 10 -15+minutes - I am serious when I say maybe 2 or 3 good coughs. I don't know what to do here.

The only thing I have found to ease that feeling is breathing in through my nose and out through my mouth several times and slowly - but I can only do that once I stop the coughing. I know there is something about the way I am coughing that is causing this, but I don't know "how to cough" I guess without causing this feeling. I just want to be able to get that junk out of me without throwing up to do it.

Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you greatly. I know someone here has to have some ideas.

I'm not sure where, but someone else had a similar question on the forum...did you try a search for the coughing tips?

I think I've had a few cases similar to what you described, but I mainly would take in several deep breaths before trying to cough. Not always with good end results, but on occasion something comes out. Most cases something comes up when I'm not trying to. However, I tend to believe being in a room with some humidity will help.

I have this problem as well. Ushually it takes more then two or three coughs but not much. I actually asked my dr about it today when i was at a check up and he said that it was most likely mucus irritating the back of your throat that makes you start coughing and then not be able to stop... then up it comes =( He said that there isnt really much that you can do about it ....
I basically do the same thing as you and just try to calm everything down before i throw up but that is much easier said then done.

Something that I have noticed that is sorta weird is that it seems to happen to me more in some places then others. WHat I mean is in montery (northern cali) where i am origionally from it used to happen to me almost every night but down at school in LA it happens much less often.... i dont know why its just kinda weird.

ANyway sorry i dont have any suggestions but dont worry you arnt alone =() even through im sure we all hate the feeling together!

Wish I had some useful advise I could give you. I do the same thing. I get to coughing hard and up it comes. Sometimes it just comes so fast, you don't have a chance to stop it. But I have noticed that sometimes (not all the time) after I throw up that I tend to quit coughing. Sometimes I get to coughing a lot and I get the watery feeling in my mouth like I'm going to throw up. Usually if I lay down for a minute, it will pass. It's not a pleasant experience. Luckily, it has never happened to me in public (always at home). Hope you can figure something out that helps you!!

I love this forum! Of course I'm sorry that you all have this problem, but now I know that my boys are in good company.

It is usually post nasal drip that causes this for my kids too. We make sure we are never far from a bucket. I keep baggies in my car and my purse too.

Jesse has gotten really good at calming down (even when he starts to throw up). Josh has always been more of a more dramatic cougher, thus vomiter. My question is what do you do about this when you are out in public? (like school).

I've gotta go back and read Risa's post.

To stop the feeling of nausea rub the point between your upper lip and your nose (smack in the middle) This is a meridian point that will help stop you from throwing up. It worked for me in the past and it also helps to increase my appetitie. Tap or rub it.

How hard are you actually coughing? Maybe its due more to a weak gag reflex than how hard you are coughing. Regardless I know its an obstacle. Maybe you could try drinking something and making sure your throat is good and moist as well as your lungs. I really dont know but it could create less impact thus maybe you will be less likely to throw up. Again I am just guessing at a suggestion. I hope you find something that works. Good luck
