New CF and TTC

Hello! I am a newly 31 year female recently diagnosed with CF. My husband and I have been TTC (without luck) and finally saw a fertility speciailst. As part of routine bloodwork, my fertility specialist tested to see if I was a carrier of the CF gene and actually found that I have CF.

It has a been a few months since diagnosis. I am now hooked up with a care center and receiving medical treatment for the CF. I have also completed fertility testing, which included hormone bloodwork, a dye test, ultrasound and examination. All tests results came back good. In addition, my husband has been tested and we found he has good swimmers! We have also done genetic counseling, and my husband is not a carrier.

I am writing to ask if there are any other tests that could be recommended? Has there been a procedure, technique, or anything else that has helped other women conceive?

Also, I am writing to see if anybody can recommend a fertility doctor in the Philadelphia - or at least East Coast area that specializes in treating women with CF?

Any and all information would be valueable! Thank you!

I would recommend (I have never been pregnant) to investigate which genetic test has been done.

The most common tests (cheaper for insurance to pay) do not test for all known CF genes - only the most common.

I know of at least two cases of women with CF giving birth to a child with CF even after the husband was genetically screened - because the husband carried a gene that wasn't looked for in the cheaper genetic test.

Just a head's up. Ambry Genetics can give you more info on how to ensure your husband is screened for all known CF mutations.

I also recommend Ambry. My husband and I had to go through In Vitro because of the CF (it affects males as they are born without the tube to carry the sperm from the testicles to ejaculation). I did a basic genetic panel of 87 mutations. But I didn't feel comfortable with that so we went with ambry.

Have you heard of robitussin/mucinex to thin the mucus? There are a few women on this board who have had success doing that method. If that doesn't work after a few months, I would look into IUI. Best of luck, the journey is well worth the outcome!!!!!!!
