Anyone aware of any new technology or inhaled antibiotic to treat PA? I have seen much progress recently. TOBI doesn't work anymore.

This is what I found when I just did a search, on an antibiotic called "Corus" which has been in clinical trials. Here is the link to the article: <u>http://www.coruspharma.com/programs/antibiotic.asp</u>. This is the first information I've seen on it but I will keep looking for more updated info since this was written in 2004. I have been wondering myself if there were any other antibiotics besides TOBI on the horizon that can be inhaled. I have always been concerned about pumping these powerful drugs into the whole body when they are only needed in the lungs, and what their effects are on the other organs.

When my husbands last culture showed that he was no longer sensitive to TOBI, the doctor RX colistin (Coly-mycin Parental). It is currently only in power form and you have to reconstitute it with Normal Saline and sterile water. You should have your doctor look into that if Tobi is no longer working for you.

Here is another article, with a later update, on inhaled Corus antibiotic: <u>http://www.esiason.org/article.php?wh=53</u> This looks promising.

hi, is it the normal sputum culture that determines if tobi is no more effective? If the culture shows resistancy to tobramycin does this mean we have to stop tobi? By the way there is inhaled cipro comming in 2007.

If your sputum culture shows that you are resistant to TOBI you should stop using it, actually the doc should have already taken you off of it. You need to be really careful of building a resistance to medications as there are only a few that are currently on the market for CF lung infections.

The Corus antibiotic, aztreonam, is available now by i.v. only. Corus is doing trials with an inhaled form using the new super-fast e-flow nebulizer system. But the trials are still only in Phase II stage, so it will be at least a couple of years before we know how well this strategy works.
