New Med

I am on a cleanout right now going on 2 weeks. I am on a new med called Synercid. Has anyone ever been on that before? I find it to be horrible. It's causing me horrible muscle pain and I am breaking out in a rash on my face. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had similar experiences with this med.

Isn't a rash one of those signs of negative drug reactions that they say needs to be reported to the Dr. right away?

Hi Nicole,
I've never heard of that med, but my kids had a similar reaction to Oxycillin (rash etc). It happened after being on the med for 12 days and it started al,ost immediately after the dose started.

Love your name Clashpunk. Are you a Clash fan? I saw them in 1980- they're the best! By the way, I live in Kingston, MA- another South Shore girl! Where do you go for clinic?

Oh yeah, heard of Synercid before, actually gave it to patients before....What are you growing out of your sputum.? Sometimes, it is given to those who are MRSA positive, but also VRSA..or vanco resistant staph, which is a very bad bug to have. The patien I had to give it to had what was called VRE, or vanc resistant enterococcus. It is a very high powered drug, usually not given unless it is a very resitant bug. What do the docs think about the muscle pains and rash? Sounds like a reaction to me...are you at home or in hospital? Maybe they can switch you to a more tolerable drug. Thanks guys for all your help. Cepaciagirl they used it on me to give me a break from the vanco because last cleanout I was so sick and they didn't take my blood for 36 hours and started the med anyway and I was in kidney failure. So they decided this med is better on the kidneys. I am actually stopping today I had the last dose of it thank god! Oh and Jane, yes one of my fav bands is the Clash. I was actually going to see them because I heard they were going to tour again but then Joe Strummer died so I was pretty bummed. And I go to Children's in Boston. Do you go there also?

Nicole, Yes we go to Children's (a little more often than I'd like) In fact, one son just came home from 9South yesterday. We probably passed each other in the halls. My kids see Dr. Sheils.

( South is great, so much bigger and better. And actually my pain is worse today. And I was just informed by my doctor I am the fist CF patient to receive this med. I am extremely mad no one told me in the first place and I could have avoided this whole muscle pain ordeal by saying no I don't want this med. I have an appt tomorrow and heads are gonna roll!

Good for you Nicole! I'm really surprised they actually told you that you were the first one to use Synercid. Don't you feel like a guinea pig? Did they give you anything for the rash?

When my younger son got a reaction (rash and small bumps) the doctors wouldn't believe it was from the medicine. They kept telling us it was probably bug bites from sitting out in the garden. We knew what it was because my older son had the same reaction to the same med.

Go kick some MD butt tomorrow!
