I don't think I've ever heard of net carbs? I always thought carbs were carbs - regardless. If it works out to 15g of starch - then its a carb that should be covered by insulin.

I count carbs, sugars and fruit. I don't count sugar alcohols. Here is some info I found on it:

"Sugar alcohols, also know as polyols, are ingredients used as sweeteners and bulking agents. They occur naturally in foods and come from plant products such as fruits and berries. As a sugar substitute, they provide fewer calories (about a half to one-third less calories) than regular sugar. This is because they are converted to glucose more slowly, require little or no insulin to be metabolized and don't cause sudden increases in blood sugar. This makes them popular among individuals with diabetes."

Ps. I meant to say 15g of carbs equals a starch.

You guys with CFRD ever try Cinnamon extract?

<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.vitacost.com/NSICinnamon

A 2004 study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry stated that specific cinnamon bark compounds were found to increase fat cells' sugar metabolism by 20 times. This may account for cinnamon's ability to promote healthier, more balanced blood sugar levels. A recent study in the medical journal Diabetes Care indicated 1g (1,000 mg) to 6g (6,000 mg) per day promoted healthy blood sugar levels in humans.

Worth a shot I think?

Net carbs is determined by taking the total number of carbs, and
then subtracting those that are from fiber and sugar alcohol.

Net carbs are usually the ones you hear about with regard to the
Atkins diet and stuff like that. The idea is to learn to
differentiate between complex carbs and simple carbs. In CFRD the
purpose of learning to count carbs is to learn to recognize the
pattern of how your body reacts to sugars you eat. Once
you've learned to count carbs, you can reasonably predict how much
insulin you require before a meal.

it looks im developin CFRD (or most likely have it already) as i had a ragin thirst 3 weeks ago (sure sign i identified immediately) and rushed to my local doctor (non CF unit) to get my blood glucose levels checked.

we measure blood glucose levels diferently in the UK .. but the normal BMs first thing in the mornin (fastin) are between 4 to 7 and 7 to 10 after a meal ..... iwas registerin 25 after a meal and 9.9 in the mornin ! *sobs*

im havin a glucose tolerance test at hospital on sept 20th .... i know the worst .... iv lost 25 pounds of weight in 3 months .. and im worried about lettin high blood sugars ride for so long until my new hospital appointment!

how dangerous is high blood glucose ?? am i gonna go blind or wreck my kydneys ?

fuggin CF !! grrrrrrrrrrrr ..

The important thing is that you recognised the symptoms and sought help! My blood sugars were 29.7 about a month ago, and now thanks to monitoring and taking insulin, the highest I've been in a few days is 12. Having high blood sugars won't make you go blind, its only if you let it go untreated that you can run into problems. But it does seem that you've got cfrd...in my opinion anyway. I was only diagnosed last month, and its a hassle but you get used to it!

the doc wanted to put me on insulin right away .. when i gave the mornin blood test 2 hours after a meal .. he rang my house in the afternoon and told me go back down. he told me 25 .. but bein reluctant to go on insulin i tried to buy some time and told him CFRD is diferent to normal diabetes and should be handled diferently ,lol!

so we agreed a followin fastin blood test the next mornin .. i fasted for 19 hours and my blood glucose was 7! he then said i dont have diabetes .. but 7 is high normal range and i had to starve myself for a whole 19 hours to get down to that.

so i bought an acuchek monitor and kept an eye on myself all weekend .. i was 9.9 in the mornin .. and between 12.f and 16, 1 hour after a meal !

im hyper .. but not crazy hyper .. so i get on the exercise bike 1 1/2 hours after a meal and force myself to drink water like its goin out of fashion.

iv also considered goin on the atkins diet till i get sorted out , lmfao but i miss carbs too much! you cant live on bacon n eggs only!

i havnt tested myself for nearly 3 weeks .. so im in the dark about my current BMs.

i dont mind if i have to on insulin .. it puts on crazy amounts of weight aparently .. and i miss bein a fat ***** ! i enjoyed checkin my blood glucose too .... im anal in that kinda way!

peace.. FJ.

With CFRD you're not supposed to give up the carbs--it's different rules from other forms of diabetes. Since we CFers don't absorb stuff very well if we've got pancreatic insufficiency, we need to take every opportunity to put nutrient-rich foods into our systems. I would encourage you to NOT do the Atkins thing as you could run the risk of starving your body. Also, if you're cutting out carbs and taking in mostly protein, that also could harm your kidneys which are already having a tough time if you've been in ketoacidosis.

Suck it up and go the insulin route. I initially resisted it and tried to control CFRD by other means, but ultimately I realized that resisting was tantamount to self-abuse. I'm glad I pulled out of my denial when I did, otherwise I could have caused irreparable damage to my body.
