Nose bleeds

Does anyone have nose bleed problems? Samantha's nose has had blood streaks coming out for about a month now. Not all the time but frequently. Our house is not that dry. Our humidity reads at about 50%.

Has anyone had this problem due to Pulmazyme, Tobi or Flovent? Samantha's Flovent dose was recently increased substantially to 220. She also does Pulmazyme twice daily. I'm just wondering if the meds might be irritating her nasal passages.

When I was younger I used to have severe nosebleeds ALL THE TIME! I would wake up in the morning with my bed covered in blood. I would soak beach towels with blood, it would just pour out of my nose. It was really bad, but definately worse in the winter when the heat was on and the house was very dry. Then my CF doc put me on Vitamin K and it helped alot. I always had nasal polyps but the nosebleeds were not attributed to polyps. Now, i only have nosebleeds if its really dry in the winter, its much much better.
Maybe you should ask your childs doc about vit K if you feel like the nosebleeds are a problem.
good luck...

all of those meds can cause irriatation. I am unsure of your region, I know here in WV it has been very cold and dry, this will always cause irriation. Most likely it is weather related possibly f/u with an ENT if it dosen't subside, maybe it is infective in nature.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

We live in the Chicago area, so it is cold and dry. Samantha also is trying to get over a cold, but the nose bleeds started much before that. What I do notice is that she is coughing much more in the last few days and the bleeding is increasing. I'm used to listening to her with the stethoscope and she sounds clear. I wonder if some of this nasal stuff is dripping down into her throat and increasing the cough.

I will also ask about the vitamin K. Thanks!

Ask your GP about the Vit K. I would recommend you have your doc order "clotting factors" to determine the need. What happens in our bodies we can not dissolve fat soluble vitamins ADEK, looks familiar now I bet! Well the K encourages clotting. If you don't have a increased INR or PTT/PT then you do not need it. I still recommend the ENT if it dosen't go away. Normally, we all bleed at some point in time, I actuallly have three viles of injectible for emergecies up stairs.I won't use it though unless the lung flood breaks loose.

As I child I was plagued by bloody noses too, in fact my mom and I were just discussing this the other day. The trick we learned, since most bleeds came at night, was to put Vaseline on a Q-tip and rub some in the nostrils, it feels awful but it keeps the nasal passages moist. Also try a humidifier, I know some disagree with using them but if you keep on top of keeping them clean you could do that too. The Vaseline by far had the greatest effect. Ask her Doctors next time you visit as to what might be causing them. I was on Vitamin K at the time.
