OK, this is totally not CF related...but can use some advice from some great CF friends! My husband (who does not have CF) came down with a nasty sinus/cold thing yesterday. While I was at work today, his mom showed up to "baby" him. She brought him a previously used (by his grandma and dad) nasal irrigation kit. I about puked! Is it just me and the fact that I am so particualr about NOT sharing anything that has to do with bodily fluids- no matter how much they have been cleaned or is that just nasty? I told him not to use it and I would return it tomorrow...he didn't understand why not. I guess I just think about how much work I put into keeping my aerosol parts-inhalers-etc. clean and avoiding germs. I don't know how this was cleaned after it's last use, and I know for a fact it wasn't coaked in hydrogen peroxide or placed in boiled water to sanitize it. AND even if it was- it had been up someone else's nose- while THEY were sick!!!!!! Please back me up here, or tell me I am crazy. To top it off- she brought him her "used" nasonex prescription to use. I am just disgusted with how much his family wants to share if you know what I mean. I wanted to trash both of them to get those nasty germs out of my house! What would you say to her, or do any of you have any proof for me to show her, about how wrong and dangerous that is to share these types of things?

That's gross.

I would be reacting just the same.

Go take the nasal kit and nasonex rx to an infectious disease doc and have them swab it to see what germs are growing on there. Hopefully it's something fun like e. coli <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

Really gross. This is sanitation 101.

Seriously how expensive are nasal kits? I bet they're cheaper than a co-pay for a doc visit to treat whatever nastiness will come from sharing these items.

Do they share toothbrushes as well? If not, you might want to ask them why not... it's no different than sharing a nasal rinse kit or a nasal spray.

Fight On, girl. You're dead on on this one....

I am sure they mean well but that is absolutely disgusting!! *gag* Even the packaging that comes with the kits says people shouldn't share them- just finding that will give a clear straightforward 'don't share this with other people' recommendation. Ditto on nasal spray, especially since those things can't be taken apart and sterilized like nebs can! (not to mention sharing Rx drugs is illegal, if you need more ammo on top of the gross factor. You can always simply say, if he has an allergic reaction or something to it and needs medical attention, it's awkward to then explain where it came from!)

The nasal kits are over the counter at the pharmacy, come with the bottle and 50 (or more) saline packets for $10 or less. They come in a couple different brands.

Bleah! Don't get me started on well meaning inlaws and relatives. I'm STILL trying to convince a couple of them that hankies are very very bad and make me gag. Cringe.

While I think your husband WOULD benefit from a sinus rinse kit, would be best to get him his own brand new one. The one we use for DS, I'd originally bought for myself, but used it on him instead and turned around and bought a new one for myself.
