Well its over three months now and my granddaughter Grayson still hasn't been home yet. However, good news is that she had her second surgery to reconnect her bowel and her infection is gone and her lungs are clear....Thank God!! Now my question is that since they reconnected her a few weeks ago she was no longer on a contineous feed and lost a great deal of weight. She has started on enzemes and they are tweeking them now,,,however she is still not eating well and are talking about a G-Tube. Right now, that sounds like a great idea so her mommy can have her home. They are giving her another week to see if she will start eating more and gaining. She is now only a few oz. over what she weighed at birth. Does anyone have one and how long does it take for recovery, and was it permanant with you. Thank you so much for being here to answer questions. It helps more than anyone can know.

Could be issues with relearning how to eat via a bottle. Could be associating eating/drinking from a bottle with stomach discomfort.

DS had issues with bottle feeding and with gaining weight and was put on formula with extra calories (more powder to water ratio). Also, once they got his enzymes figured out, got him on zantac for reflux, put him on formula he liked (hated pregestimil), he did better. But I recall there was talk at the time of having a therapist come down and work on his feeding issues.

DS got his at 5 months. We were in the hospital overnight and other than that, I don't remember that he had to recover anymore at home or anything. It worked well with him and he gained weight rather quickly. We haven't used it in over 6 months now, but he still has it in.
We are now contemplating taking it out, but I think it might be best to keep it in so he can have it if he needs it later in life. I think it was a good thing that he got it young - he not only will not remember it, but he was good in the hospital - I wouldn't want to know what he'd be like at this age having to stay in a hospital bed for a day <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

madi's g-tube has been a blessing, she was in the "failure to thrive catoagory" for over a year, when we got the tube, the figured out her recipe, she has grown into the 50th percentile. as far as the surgey, it leaves no scars, the swelling at the g-tube site went away about a week or so. madi ebded up needing a nissan done afterwards, but that isnt always needed, but anyways, its a great thing for those with weight problems. GOOD LUCK
