I've noticed alot of people asking about diabetes and weight gain and such. It's been my experiance that emphasis has been placed on quantity and not quality of food for CFers. I was just in for a tune up and was getting annoyed with everyone saying "eat, eat, eat". I was about ready to knock the dietician upside the head with her clipboard, and it dawned on me that I needed to ask her specific questions rather than just tune out while she gave me the "high calorie, here are some milk shake recipies" speech. So I thought I'd share my info with everyone. FYI: I was diagnosed @ 5 weeks of age, w/ CFRD about two years ago, and am about 15-20 lbs. underweight. I go to an adult CF clinic at National Jewish Research and Med. Center in Denver. The facility has been rated the #1 respratory hospital in the nation for five years. The dietician I see is a pulmonary dietician who has been there for 12 yrs, and with the CF clinic for 5.A) CFers need a high calorie, high protien, calcium rich diet: there is a simple test that can be done that measures how many calories you burn by just sitting and breathing. You breath into a device for about ten minutes. I reccomend it so that your dietician can give you a number of calories to shoot for specifically for you. *Protien: My dietician reccomends 55-65 grams of protien a day. *Calcium!!!! There is a CF related osteoporosis that is still very new to researchers, but very important to patients. Calcium rich foods also tend to be high in calories. Supplements are very helpful, but do not rely on them. Make sure that your supplement is water souluable. You may need a perscription calcium that is better absorbed. * A, D, E, K,: most of us take these any way, but remember you get better absorbsion if you take them with food, enzymes. Also, if you take two doses, try to seperate them, one in the morning one at night. B) Avoid too many concentrated sweets. Table sugar,Candy, Soda, sweet treats can throw blood sugar out of wack and thus prevent absorbtion of calories, so try to moniter these. Fructose (the sugar in fruit) is way ok, plus you get the benifits of that fruit. THE DAIRY MYTH: some people think that dairy makes mucus thicker. Not true at all. It may make you feel like your throat is coated, but it's not doing anything to your mucus.C) Unsaturated fats are important! There is research to indicate that they enhance the immune system. About %10 of the fats in your daily intake should consist of mono, polyunsaturated fat. D) FLUIDS! You need 1oz of fluid per kilogram of body weight. Fluids can be juices, sports drinks, water, uncaffienated drinks. In the summer when we sweat more often, we loose more sodium and this can be dangerous, Try drinking gatoraid b/c it has sodium in it. E) Eat a Variety of foods. hope this helps.
