Hi all,
I'm doing good-much better. Breathing is good, infection is gone. All I am dealing with now is the typical preggers shortness of breath at times-its super annoying. I suspect that us cfers experience that earlier than most, am I right? The other thing I'm dealing with in my pregnancy right now is weight/tummy issues. I lost so much weight while I was sick that the docs want me to gain about 10 lbs. I've never had the typical cf weight issues in my life so this is new to me. They want me to get 3000 cals a day-omg, its impossible! I don't know how these women who have the insane cravings and sit at the fridge eating tons of food do it-how can they even move or breathe after? I am EXTREMELY uncomfortable after I eat-everything feels tight and packed in there and it even makes my breathing more uncomfortable. I've tried the eat small meals, yeah yeah that doesn't do anything for me. So by now I definately feel pregnant. Full and stuffed.
So I'm officially in the home stretch-the 3rd trimester, 13 weeks to go! I can't believe how fast it goes, but it still feels like this birth is lightyears away. If I just knew how it was going to go that day...
I am planning for a non-medicated vaginal birth attended by a doula (labor coach), under the supervision of my OB. Of course I realize all scenarios can come up so I am staying open minded. In the end, I just want to bring home a healthy mommy and baby.

My pregnancy is going well. I am 25 weeks on Friday. My body is adapting to the changes very well. In many ways I feel better pregnant than not! I never thought I'd be saying that. I realize that the next 3 months will be the most difficult since 1st trimester was a breeze. I am rather enjoying the honeymoon of 2nd trimester which technically ends this week :-( I met with my birth doula this weekend that we hired after interviewing a couple of top candidates. I think we made a good choice and I look forward to spending time with her during delivery. She's very soothing and knowledgeable. My DH, she and I went through all the different parts of a birthing plan and made decisions for various things in the event that the birth is relatively complication free. My DH is going to write it up into short bullet points and we will have it distributed to the birth team as well as posted on the wall. We are focusing on the stuff we consider most important and not so much the frilly stuff like music. The frilly stuff I will just do and not ask. Things like waiting for the umbilical cord to stop pumping before cutting it is an A priority for us. This allows the baby to start life with a full blood supply.

My last perinatologist appt went very well. They are happy with my weight which was 12.5 lbs from pre-preg weight. My uterus hasn't really started to move in on the area of my lungs yet. The doctor taught me how to feel my uterus by pushing on my tummy and it was really cool like a water balloon in there. My little boy is quite the kicker these days. He seems to be either soothed or energized by the Vest treatment. I stayed on Tobi even though I was having some ringing because my lungs have been junky. I see the cf doc. on 4/4 so we'll see how my pfts are. My energy is still good so I feel that it's likely just a change in seasons thing and not an infection. My hemoptysis was gone in 1st trimester and now it is spiradic but still not as prevalent as before pregnancy. I got it while they were taking my fundal length measurement which by the way was 23 which they said was right on track for 24 weeks.

I've made some progress on finding childcare for our son. I posted on craigslist for working mom's wishing they could stay home. I got a lot of replies but one in particular that seemed like a good match. I interviewed her this weekend and things are looking good. We have some stuff to work out as well as the fact that I don't want to hire someone until I can see them interact with my son. She is so ready to quite working that she is considering taking the summer off anyway because she just can't stand being away from her little guy. He's 12 mo. now. She suggested that she could help me during my maternity leave with cooking and cleaning all the while interacting with the baby a bit. It seems God has blessed me with this connection. I am trying not to get head over heals set with going with her but it does seem like a good fit. She would come to my house each day with her son and is very flexible. The childcare issue has been the biggest worry for me during pregnancy - - like I said I really can't complain about pregnancy :)

I have been doing a lot of research about birth and as many of you might remember from my epidural posts, I have decided not to get an epidural for multiple reasons but #1 because of hemoptysis and my inability to move around to a good position. The OB group is not thrilled with this because they say in the case of an emergency c-section they'd have to use general for speed since they couldn't just jack up the epi narcotics. They don't want to have to intubate me but I reassured them that I have had general when I had my gallbladder out and was extubated just fine. I hate how they plan for the worst and wish I could have done this at a birthing center. I plan to stay at home laboring as long as possible since the hospital is a 5 minute drive from my home. I have gotten an exercise ball and sit on it each night to strengthen my perenium (sp?) and also to help encourage the baby to be in a proper birthing position. Did you know that research is thinking that the reason many women in the past's babies were correctly positioned for birth was because of the work the women did on hands and knees..scrubbing floors etc. Now we sit crosslegged in our desk chairs with a rounded back which doesn't encourage the correct birth position. Also couches are the same for bad positioning. I found this very interesting.

How do you all feel about having a hep/saline lock put in early on so in case of dehydration or other need for an IV they've got the entry and no need for finding a vein. My veins suck and if I'm dehydrated I'm sure they won't be better. I think I will opt for this but I also don't want them to use it as a means of control. Although I will be on constant fetal monitoring so it's not like I'll have a lot of freedom. My hope is not to be in the hosp. during early labor but if I am I'm going to inquire about breaks from the monitor for showering, walking around. Also, did any of you mom's get the stocking fetal monitor instead of the synch belt? I am going to try to opt for the stocking...sounds a lot more comfortable.

i meet with the anesthesialogist at 32 weeks and will decide then what I want and don't want should there not be an emergency. The safety of my son and myself is an utmost priority even if it means a less than ideal birth and/or longer recovery for me.

I'm working out - still going to my two aerobics classes and trying to go to a 3rd yoga class each week. I'm starting to get the silly questions like "You aren't going to deliver that baby here in class are you?"

Lauren and Christian I am glad to hear you are both doing well!

I am also doing good, 8 week (or less) to go. I had an appt with my OB last Friday and he indicated he may want to induce me at 38 weeks because the baby is a bit big and has been through my pregnancy. Two weeks ago he was 4.4lbs and is on track for 9 lbs so they are monitoring his weight closely. I am feeling good just a little more tired and a bit uncomfortable. But I am still walking everyday just a little slower now. I have gained 22 lbs so far. So doing just fine in that department.

Everyone looks at me and thinks I am due any minute.... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Hi Michelle,
I was reading your post and noticed your age. I have a few questions for you if you dont mind me asking. I am around your age and have cf myself. We are planning to have a baby as soon as our house is done being built.
I was wondering what your cf was like before pregnancy. And how it has affected your cf. Do you have panreatic insuffiency? Does your cf affect your lungs much? Its rare that I have found a cfer that is in her 30's and was wondering how things are for them before being preggos and after.
If you had to give me a word of advice before I started this journey what would it be?

Hi Khristina,

I do not mind answering any of your questions. CF only really effects my lungs, I do not have any pancreatic insuffiency. I do not have a problem with gaining weight and I have never been put on enzymes or anything like that. However it does effect my lungs. The first time I was hospitalized was in December 2005 and it took me a long time to feel good after that. Before I got sick my FEV1 about 65%, while I was in the hospital it went down to 28% and I was able to get it back about 48%... but I felt good.

Anyway because I felt good I decided to try and get pregnant. (By the way my CF dr. was not for it but said she would support me if I did get pregnant.) Once I did get pregnant my CF doctor dropped me- I got an official letter from her in my third month saying she would no longer look after me- so I do not have a CF doctor at the moment and due to lawsuits in this area no pulmonolgist will take me on while I am pregnant. The only people I can rely on are my high risk dr., my OB, and my PCP. They have all been great.

I do feel really good- I have continued to exercise by walking everyday. I have been sick twice and put on antibiotics while I have been pregnant but recovered pretty quickly. Unfortunately I have no idea what my FEV1 is - probably in mid 40's. I will see a new docotr as soon as I have the baby. I have had a pretty normal pregnancy so far. My OB expects me to make it full term and is looking to induce me around 38 weeks because the baby is a little bit big.

My advice is to make sure you have a good CF doctor. Make sure that they support your decision. I would also suggest a good diet, and a lot of exercise. Just be truthful with yourself on how you feel and do what is best for you. I hope I answered your questions. Please feel free to ask me anything. Good Luck!!
