Hey, me again...

So, I am on my second day of abx I.V. merrem and ceftaz combo. On the very first night, I ended up having severe chills and achy all over. My joints hurt really badly. The next day, the chills were gone, but I still felt achy and my ankles really hurt. Strange. Today, again, my ankles feel a little sore.

Nothing is swollen. I've not run a fever (over 99.5) this whole time. So, what gives? Does anyone know if this is a side effect of the meds? I can't find it as a listed side effect. Also, I have been told that as you first start getting such strong abx, the "toxins" from all the bugs in our lungs are essentially released into our blood and can make us achy and feel much much worse. Has anyone else heard that explanation?

Anyway, thanks for any info. or experiences you care to share.

My hypothesis is that joint issues are often caused by unidentified infections. If that is correct, then the antibiotics could be killing infection in the joints that you didn't know you had.

Some of the reasons I think that: Arthritis is strongly associated with inflammation and inflammation is strongly associated with infection. It was a friend with arthritis (no cf) who clued me about the acid and inflammation connection which has helped so much in getting my infections under control. And killing off infection has mostly rid me of joint, tendon, and ligament problems I suffered for many years.

Thanks, Michele! That is really interesting. I had a DEXA scan about a year ago and everything was "normal" and don't usually have joint pain, so was shocked when it started with the IV abx. Would make perfect sense though if what you have heard is true. I guess another good reason to be on abx!

Just because you don't have joint problems normally doesn't mean you can't have something brewing in there but not symptomatic. Before I was diagnosed, I was primarily a sinus-sufferer. I routinely showed up at the ER without sinus pain and they would tell me "You can't have a sinus infection because if you had one, you would be in enormous pain." And I would tell them "Trust me, I can too have a sinus infection and the area just be basically numb". So they would prescribe antibiotics and I would take the first dose and about an hour later the pain would hit like a ton of bricks. I figured the pain was due to my body going to war with the infection. Based on that and other experiences, when abx (or some other effective treatment) causes pain like you describe, I think it is often due to stuff being killed off. For one thing, (as you noted already) as infection gets killed, it can leave toxins in the system which takes time to mop up.
