ORGAN DONATION

While Lauren was being admitted into the hospital we went through the normal process of many people coming into the room and asking us questions.

I had at least 4 people ask if Lauren was a organ donor. Each time I said yes they would look at me with a shocked expression. One person just assumed the answer was no and I had to interupt him and tell him she was.

Am I a weird parent that I have discussed this with my kids? All three of my kids have stated if something ever happened to them they would want their organs donated.

I wonder if it is because we deal with CF. Do parents with "healthy" children not discuss these types of subjects with their children?? I think it is a important enough topic it should be discussed in every household!!

I agree it is important and should be discussed in every household, but it's not. I would say that yes, it's probably because of the CF running around. It's generally ignored especially when it comes to kids. No one wants to consider being in a position where they have to donate a child's organs. In short - you're intelligent and unusual.

good for you, seana. many parents i'm sure shy away from anything relating to death in discussions with their kids. which is understandable--it's a scary thing to think about. however, in all likelihood, your kids won't have to make this decision as kids, but as adults. the fact that you've already gotten the ball rolling, have them thinking about it, is what good parenting is all about in my opinion.

i can't remember this being discussed with me by my parents, but i do remember them agreeing with me when i put myself down as a donor when i got my driver's license.

they were always donors that i remember. maybe that's where i got the idea from. maybe my mom can chime in and help me remember

when i was in the hospital at age 15, back in 1996, i'm not sure if hospitals asked about that type of stuff. I'm sure glad that they do now.
