OT but holiday related

Does anyone give a holiday card with a gift card, cash or check to the garbage and recycling person in your area?

I've never done it before, but heard someone (don't remember where) mention it and I think it's a great idea.

I decided to do it this year though. Considering we are strapped, I thought someting homemade might show the same setiments. So I set about the house scrounging for the makings of something delicious. I found enought stuff to make peanut butter cookies. So I baked my little heart out this morning. I also found an empty water bottle and filled it up with some milk and chilled it in the freezer. I left it by the garbage can with a note simply telling him thank you and that we hope he has a wonderful Thanksgiving.

I heard him today (I was home sick) so I peeked through the window to make sure he didn't mistake it for garbage. I saw him smile and put the goodies into his truck.

Then tonight when Mark went out to get the garbage cans, they were already up by the side of our house and he had attached a little note. He thanked us for the goodies and wished us a happy thanksgiving as well.

Just curious if anyone else does this? I hope I made his day.

I do the same thing every year around Hanukkah. Give a nice gift to the garbage man, post man, news deliverer, etc. I think it's a great idea to remeber these every day people.

Ohhhh, never thought about the mailman. I will do that. We don't get a newspaper. It's such a great idea, I can't believe I've never done it before!

Hi Julie. I have given money to our garbage man/newpaper man/postman. It usually isn't much, but it's the thought that counts. However, for the postman, I am always afraid that my "regualr" mailman won't get it (that a sub will be working for him that day). I have often thought about calling the P.O. to see if they can give me his name, but I don't know if they would do that. The cookies are a good idea too. I never thought of that.

Every year, my family gives the trash man a card and either cash or a case of beer. He seems to very much appreciate it ^_^ My father also used to do home delivery of newspapers, and he was always so tickled that people would give him a card or something in appreciation. A small token, but it made his day.

when i was 10 years old i had a paper round, and at xmas time i looked forward to getting a little cash from the households.

And if it wasn't left out, I would make some noise putting the paper in the letterbox or being brave would ring their bell and come up with not remembering what paper they got, so they had to open the door.

Ahh those were the days<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
